The Cream of the Crop
William Jackson III, Houston Cougars
– I’ve been on the William Jackson III hype train for a while now and it is still chugging along. He is a fluid athlete that has the skill-set to be a elite man cover corner in this league. If you take the strengths and weaknesses of both Marcus Peters and Kevin Johnson, my top two cornerbacks in the 2015 NFL Draft, the end result would be eerily similar to William Jackson III. It is rare in one thing to have his length and size to go along with his incredible athleticism, but with his ball skills, footwork, and aggressive mentality, he has the traits of a future star at the cornerback position. He has been my top cornerback since late January, and will stay that way as I believe he is the best pure cornerback prospect to come out in years with the combination of his cover skills, playmaking ability, physical traits, and upside.
Vernon Hargreaves III, Florida Gators
– When I tell people that Vernon Hargreaves III is the second best cornerback in the 2016 NFL Draft, they ask me why I think he is not good, which is quite the opposite of what I think. He is a game-changer on the outside who can turn and run with any receiver in man coverage. If you are throwing an underneath route towards the direction of Hargreaves, there is a pretty good chance that he will be all over it for the interception or deflection. His instincts and closing speed among other cornerbacks in this class is unparalleled as he is a threat each and every play the ball is thrown his way. The reason why I have Jackson over Hargreaves is not because of pure cover ability, but it is because I worry about Hargreaves playing against the tall trees of wide receivers at the next level. Where Jackson has the strength and size to combat that of those receivers, Hargreaves lacks it and will undoubtedly struggle in contested situations. Nonetheless, Hargreaves is another big-time cornerback prospect with elite foot quickness and cover skills in both Man and Zone to potentially be one of the most productive players to come out of this class.
