Pros
Tough, competitive playmaker who can create outside the pocket. Relatively accurate on the run. Quick, light feet to evade rushers while keeping his eyes downfield. Athleticism to escape pressure and extend plays. Adequate arm strength and can zip the ball even when on the move. Always looking for the big play, and can buy time until it opens up. Throws with good touch, very catchable ball on vertical patterns. Has desire to hang in the pocket, while flashing the ability to stay strong with pressure around him. Smart and knows how to move through progressions. Not reckless with the football. Hard-working with high character marks.
Cons
Short quarterback with small frame and tiny hands. Inconsistent in his ability/desire to play within the structure of an offensive system. Will miss wide open receivers looking for a kill shot. Fails to hit his hot read under pressure. Holds the ball too long and gets impatient waiting for receivers to come open, which will lead to the occasional scramble from a clean pocket. Does not throw with anticipation. Internal clock runs too slow, allowing pressure to get home. Backyard style of football that hasn’t always proven successful against NFL pass rush and secondary skill. Arm is decent, but Adams has a slight windup in his delivery that elongates his motion. Ball placement is spotty on driven passes, causing tough adjustments for receivers. Wants big throwing windows to open up and is hesitant to rip passes into tight spaces.
Analysis
Vernon Adams is a fun prospect who lived on highlight-reel plays at Eastern Washington and Oregon, showing the ability to escape pressure and make some impressive throws on the run. The athletic passer has strong zip on the ball for a small-framed quarterback, and his height rarely appeared to be an issue with the Ducks.
