If Jalen Smith becomes a Pro Bowl level talent, and Zeke and Dak continue their 2016 performances, then 3 of their first 4 picks will be in the top tier of NFL talent. That’s pretty salty.
The final judge of all drafts is not just based on individual performances or accolades. A draft’s ultimate value will be judged on how it helped the team achieve playoff success. For example, the 1964 and 1975 drafts are the gold standards for Cowboys drafts. The ‘89 and ‘92 drafts were good too.
The ‘64 class included HOFers Mel Renfro, Bob Hayes and Roger Staubach. Between those three guys, there were 15 playoffs wins, 5 SB appearances, and 5 NFC Championship appearances. The ‘75 team had the famous “Dirty Dozen” draft class which produced HOFer Randy White, All Pro Hollywood Henderson, Pro bowlers Bob Bruenig and Pat Donovan and others. They won 8 playoff games, played in 3 SBs, and 5 NFC Championship games.
When the 2016 draft class produces some playoff success, we can talk.
