The need for an improved pass rush is the main topic of the Dallas Cowboys offseason. In all of the discussion, though, last year’s sack leader has somehow become an afterthought. Could the Cowboys best pass rusher still be Benson Mayowa, and what impact could he have on the 2017 defense?

Whether it’s the drafting of Taco Charlton, the delayed debut of Charles Tapper, the hopes placed on David Irving, or DeMarcus Lawrence‘s contract year, it seems that every other defensive end is being looked at to fix the Cowboys’ biggest weakness. However, there is reason to think that Benson Mayowa can also be a major factor.

...Ironically, the one player which doesn’t have very high expectations coming into the season is their first round pick defensive end Taco Charlton. Not really adored by the Cowboys fan base prior to the draft, Charlton comes into his rookie season rather quietly.

...It’s certainly an interesting thought. Typically, rookie pass rushers don’t come away with high sack totals in their first season, unless they are Joey Bosa type. When you consider that Taco Charlton is not only a rookie pass rusher, but a rookie pass rusher taken in the back-end of the first round, it’s hard to expect too much in terms of sacks.

Still, I think 4.5 is a good baseline to work from for Charlton. If he were to finish his rookie season with 4 sacks, I think that would be a relatively successful first year in the league. It would leave him some room to grow as a player for sure, but it would be a nice start...

...The Dallas Cowboys are one step closer to the 2017 season, having completed their OTAs and minicamp from The Star. Throughout these early summer weeks, the Cowboys’ rookies have had a chance to get acclimated to America’s Team. As has been the case throughout his initial draft process, 28th overall pick DE Taco Charlton has generated little to no buzz – although the pads have yet to come on for physical defenders like him to really shine.

There is little question that Taco Charlton is going to face a learning curve as he tries to take the next step as a pass rusher in the NFL – all young defensive ends do.

However, as expected, Charlton has reportedly made most of his flashes from his natural LDE position after being set up as the “answer at RDE” by Dallas’ brass following his selection...

With each good addition we add to the DL, it's to our advantage for the cumulative effect to put more pressure on opposing QBs. The more the merrier! We may not be able to add that killer who's able to do it single-handedly but get enough 'rushmen' exerting pressure and we'll be in business. Therein lies just cause for encouragement this year. Perhaps there's hope for the Cowboys to exert good pressure, after all. :)

Bryan Broaddus noted in the previous link here from CCBoy that Charlton has been having much success from his "natural" position at LDE. Many of us here, myself included, have posted the same idea that he might be better suited to be assigned to that position once all is said and done.

I'm hoping that training camp will eventually make some potential answers become clear, as prospects will most certainly be tried on both sides of the team's DE positions. Anyhow, that promises to be an interesting aspect of camp to turn our attention to as it commences.

In any case, Damontre Moore will likely get his share of experience rushing from the RDE spot, as well as Taco will. Hopefully, the defensive staff will make some timely and astute decisions with respect to the DE spots when the time comes.

With Marinelli's rotation scheme for the DL, no one is going to lead the league in sacks...but, what interests me is that they potentially have 6 guys (or so) that could lead the team in sacks (Charlton, Collins, Crawford, Irving, Lawrence, Mayowa, Moore, Tapper) - we just don't know...if all 8 of these guys had 5+, then we will have over 40 sacks - there were only 7 teams last year with 40+ with the top two having 48 (cards) and 47 (broncos), respectively...now, I know all 8 won't have 5 sacks, but I could see this group averaging that

That'd be a welcome surprise, he flashed a few times last season.

More than a few times, actually. At Michigan, Taco Charlton chalked up 10 1/2 sacks in his last year there. Not too shabby, huh? ;)
Of course, it's unlikely that he'll manage to enter the NFL with that kind of success. It's nice to know he has potential, though.

my goodness, if he garnered the attention of the LT that a 10 1/2 sack guy gets, it will make the rest of the unit THAT much better....I, for one, love that he does up against one of the game's best in practice and likely is learning from that experience - everything else must seem like child's play - let's just hope that his success against other LT's doesn't go to his head when his is a double-digit guy :D

I think he is a good player if not over-used.

I figure Taco having more success at LE might have something to do with Tyron, who is a bad matchup for Taco.

In the offseason, always full of hype, maybe Benson can break Strahan's record this year.

He might break the record, you never know.

Lavar Ball says his son can beat MJ, he cant beat MJ being 53, but thats besides the point.....it all about the hype lately.

If he says he can beat him, and doesn't, who cares. Its forgotten at that point.
