This season, to put it nicely, sucked.
It was up and down and disappointing in many ways. However the defense performed well at times, and started to really improve the last five or so games of the season, albeit against some average to poor competition but i digress.
Here are my thoughts on some of the guys on defense who were either starters or ate up a good amount of snaps:
Demarcus Lawrence- Phenomenal, excellent. He was a force all season rushing the QB, against the run. It seems like almost every game he was affecting the QB on every other pass play, chasing down the QB, the RB, like a wild, hungry dog. I love it. He was our best defensive linemen by far.
David Irving- Man beast. Sacking, hitting the QB, flushing him out of the pocket, tipping passes, ect. Excels at the 3T and in those 3 man fronts marinelli loves. Keeper.
Needs to get better against the run, but he is still so young and still very raw.
Skies the limit.
Jaylon Smith- Ehhh, started out very bad.
He was a liability in run defense for a good chunk of the year. However he did steadily improve in the second half of the season and he made some nice plays at times. Good straight line speed and seems to be improving laterally. Coverage seems to be improving which is a good thing.
I have hope that he will become a good player for the team. Let's see how much his nerve continues to improve and all that good stuff.
Tyrone Crawford- Steady, solid player at the Weakside DE all season. Very good run defender from that spot. Strong. Hard to bully. He was actually productive rushing the passer from this spot. Had good performances against the likes of Joe Staley, Trent Williams, Eric Fisher, ect.
Also productive from the strongside and 3T.
Applies solid amount of pressure in spite of his sack totals (4.0).
Maliek Collins- I was hoping he would take a step forward and become a Pro Bowl DT. Instead he showed to be a pretty good rusher from the 3T that has his struggles in run defense. Had to play out of position at 1T most of the season and had a broken foot apparently. With David Irving having such success at the 3T I think Collins serves best as a nice role player who has potential to become more than that.
Taco- Rookie DE that was overmatched for much of the season. Started to show some growth against the Chiefs(?) with his first career sack and had two really solid performances against Oakland and Seattle. Had a handful of pressures in of those two games as well as a sack against Seattle.
Very quiet game against philly today.
Looks like a young DE with skill.
I'm not good at evaluating CBs but Lewis and Awuzie look legit. Woods looks pretty good.
