This is a general statement but I think it is worth mentioning. It is great to target a player or players to help fill a hole in our current roster. That should obviously be a goal every year.
The problem with that line of thinking is that with us picking late, we are going to have to take who is left. We can't reach for a player (even at defensive end) or we are likely to waste a pick.
We need players who can contribute and make this team. If that means that the very best player we could take at the end of round one is a running back, or an offensive lineman, or a tight end or whatever, you pull the trigger on that guy.
If you take the best player available you usually end up with a guy who can play for you and help your team. When you reach and swing and miss you end up with a player who seldom contributes and stops progress.
We need to have another productive draft this year. If we can do that we will position ourselves for a nice long run. But let's not piss off picks like we have in years past. Let's keep this current trend going.
