Welcome to the 2017 "Mel Kiper Jr. Invitational" Mock Draft. Risen Star is the commissioner of this mock. Send him a like if you understand. Let's make it the best any of us have ever participated in. With that goal in mind, let's get you up to date on the particulars and the rules. These rules were chosen to try and combat how most mocks get screwed up.
The draft begins Monday, February 20 2017, at 8:00am Eastern Time and will conclude for the day at 10:00pm EST. It will continue at 8:00am to 10:00pm each day for the remainder of the draft. In the 1st round, teams have 15 minutes on the clock to make their pick. The 2nd round will be 10 minutes. Rounds 3 and 4 will be 8 minutes.
The Mel Kiper Jr. Invitational is a four round mock draft.
1. Drafts tend to bog down because time limits aren't enforced. Here's what we are going to do to try and keep this draft moving. We are going to ask each team to give us a list of at least 3 picks they are considering in order of preference. We are going to ask for these picks two teams ahead of their time to pick. Let's use some players from last year as an example.
You are team 5. When team 3 is on the clock we ask that you send in at least a three player list if there's even a chance of you not being online when you're on the clock. It would look something like this....
1. Reuben Foster
2. Taco Charlton
3. Jabrill Peppers
We will make your pick from this list unless you specify not to. If after your 15 minutes (In the first round...times in other rounds are shorter and noted in this thread) are up, and you haven't been online to see that and make your pick, we will give you your highest option. One of the three players will always be there because only two could have gone ahead of you. This will keep the draft moving.
If a team does not contact us and their time has run out, the pick will be made by the commissioner. If this were to occur, we will not purposely give you a bad pick. Any teams with absent GMs in the first round will be run by a group vote when they are on the clock, unless a replacement GM is willing to take over. Or the absent GM shows up to finish the mock.
NOTE: Many GM's leave lists to pick from as soon as they are on the clock. This is preferred if you're not going to be around. No reason to hold up the draft for the full duration of your clock if you won't be available anyway. If you want the full time allotted before the pick is made from your list, be sure to specify to the commissioner.
Also, if a GM hasn't been around and it looks like they are not going to participate, we will not wait the entire time each time that team is on the clock. The pick will be made by a consensus.
TIP: Check the draft status when you first get up and see if the time affects you. If you don't have PC access at work and you think the draft may catch up to you, make sure we know that and go ahead and make your selections known to us via PM. Do not assume the draft won't get around to you. It can move quickly.
One way or the other the mock draft will move on. We prefer it be with less activity by us and more by you.
2. No trading veteran players. These trades just get silly. You can trade picks in this year's draft, and in the 2018 draft. Be sure to check your teams allotment of picks in the team by team picks chart below.
3. No asking other people what you should do. This is your chance to be a GM. Do your homework. Know your team's needs. Know the players in the draft. We strongly suggest no "I can't believe so and so is still on the board" type talk during the draft. Why tip anyone off? This is a fun competition. We'll have plenty of time to talk about it after the draft and grading takes place.
4. We want to keep this mock confined to one thread and we would like to keep the thread clean. To that end we are going to sticky it so it stays up top. Please notify the Commissioner of your draft picks via PM rather than posting them in the thread. We will edit the draft board for all to see. We would like this thread to be one post for the rules, draft order and selections, team by team draft choice chart and then the pick announcements there after.
Again, all picks are sent to a commissioner. If a trade is involved, both GMs are to contact the same commissioner (should there be more than one).
If posts are being added to this thread they will be deleted. Keep the spirit of the draft intact.
5. If you are interested in trading out of your pick, you can post a new thread to that end before you are on the clock. If you know a particular team you want to target in a trade, send them a private message.
This thread will be constantly updated as trades occur and picks are made.
** The Minnesota Vikings and Indianapolis Colts finished with identical records and strength of schedule. A coin flip at the combine will determine their draft position. For the purpose of this mock draft the Vikings won the coin flip.
