2017 NFL Draft Grades: Mel Kiper Is Hung Up On The Value Of Drafting Taco Charlton At 28

Somehow, I think if Kiper had lauded the Taco Charlton pick and the Cowboy draft, there would be far less complaining and stating that he's an idiot.

Let's be clear - Mel Kiper is not a scout. He doesn't attend the Combine, he doesn't attend pro days. He doesn't step foot onto college campuses, and doesn't attend games in person. What he is, is an information gatherer. He will watch video of guys, but largely has the blanks filled in by scouts that he has a relationship with. If you read his blue books back in the day, there was precious little in the writeups breaking down the capabilities of players, and more a regurgitation of the players statistics, and him stating whether he was excited about a player or not.

If Kiper doesn't give a pick or the entire Cowboy draft a high grade, who cares? Does it make their effort any less or any more than any of us think?

If you liked the Cowboy draft, you shouldn't need props from a Mel Kiper to feel better about it.

No the point that makes Kiper an idiot is that he claimed Taco was one thing three weeks ago and then when the Cowboys draft him, his analysis of Taco completely changes. That's why he garners the criticism. If he was consistent about Charlton the entire time, I get it and can buy it.

But three weeks ago in his mock and to the AJC, he talks about what an ideal pick Charlton would be at 31 for the Falcons because he would provide a pass rush option opposite Beasley. Cowboys draft him three weeks later at 28, suddenly it's not a great pick, ideal pick and Charlton goes from a guy who can help fix the Falcons pass rush issues to a guy who is probably more an "edge setter" in Dallas than a help to the pass rush problems.

Again, not sure where an opinion of a Mel Kiper gets anyone wound up. Yes, he showed a lack of consistency. But, if you are placing stock in his opinion about players, that's on you.

Your interpretation is built off ignorance of how the board is set up. The Cowboys routinely have around 18 first round grades. And they can more than 40 second round grades. There are leaked boards from past years that support that.

This has nothing to do with what you are arguing about.

You are missing the point.

I am providing evidence as to why you shouldn't ever take a guy like Kiper seriously.

I never needed the evidence. There are those out there that need validation and affirmation from others to feel better about their own opinions. I'm not one of those people.
