Mike Williams, Clemson – Senior
A big, long target with great hands and impressive athleticism, Williams was heralded as one of the top draft-eligible receivers heading into the 2015
season, but a neck injury suffered in the opener cut short his promising junior campaign. At 6-3, 220 pounds, Williams has the ability to go get the ball outside his frame, and the straight-line speed to win vertically. I’d like to see him improve at creating separation with more precise footwork in his route stems, while also finishing contested catches with greater regularity. Williams’ physical gifts are substantial however, and some growth in the execution of details at his position will go a long way toward establishing the Clemson pass catcher as the top wide receiver in the 2017 class.
JuJu Smith-Schuster, USC – Junior
Few receivers in the nation were as statistically dominant as Smith-Schuster
in 2015, as the well-built receiver posted 89 grabs for 1,454 yards and 10 touchdowns. Smith-Schuster reminds me a lot of Laquon Treadwell, and he’ll probably face similar speed/separation doubts, but he plays big and wins physically where other receivers don’t. I’ll be surprised if he isn’t in the conversation for WR1 by the end of the season.
Corey Davis, Western Michigan – Senior
Size, speed, strength and quickness – all traits that are present in abundance
in Davis’ game. No one will call Davis a burner, but he showed the ability to win vertically even against top-tier competition, and has the competitive fight to attack the football in the air despite contact. Davis is a skilled route runner who knows how to separate with smooth footwork in the stem of his pattern, but needs to fight off jams at the line of scrimmage and eliminate focus drops down the field.
