Bob Sturm, one of the most objective Dallas radio personalities and a writer for the Athletic writes a weekly column called “Coding Kellen Moore”. The column takes a deep dive into what trends are emerging regarding play calling and offensive performance. (Sorry- paid site, so cant link it)

In this week’s version, Sturm points out a comparison of offensive performance in the first 3 games of 2018 vs. the first 3 games of 2019. Here’s what it shows:
  • Total points after 3 games: 2018= 41. 2019= 97
  • Total yards after 3 games: 2018= 833. 2019= 1,444
  • Total passing yards after 3 games: 2018= 435. 2019= 907
  • Third down conversions through 3 games: 2018= 8-34. 2019= 18-31 (Wow)
  • Total offensive TDs after 3 games: 2018= 4. 2019= 13
A direct quote from Sturm’s article on this 3 game performance in Cowboys history:

For the third straight week, the Cowboys have scored over 30 points, rolled up over 470 yards, averaged over seven yards per play and won by double digits. You may not be that impressed with that statistic, so let me put it in this context: In the last 40 years – over a span of nearly 650 games – the franchise has only done it four other times COMBINED.”

I try to not be a person who overreacts too quickly, but this start (yes against lesser teams) is impressive. The numbers bear that out. Now we just need some consistency against the better teams ahead.

My favorite Stat line is 3-0, I don't see this machine letting up anytime soon. Dak is in the zone. I have over-reacted on the defense wanting more more stats as far as TFL, Sacks and turnovers.. I think it is a fan's inclination to want improvement. I think that Quinn will provide a spark on defense after watch him against the Dolphins. I just hope that the team will keep the foot on the accelerator as the season wears on.
Go Dallas!!!

Yep. It’s a long season and there will be highs and lows. The question will be how well can this team respond to the adversity that comes with every season. Good teams are measured by the adversity they can overcome.

Been an incredible season so far ...... We are gonna lose some games this year and the forum will overreact (especially the Dak haters who are just waiting for a loss to celebrate).

It's just feels different this year ...... Dak feels like a completely different Qb .....the line is back to dominanting.

True - and remember, you don't want your team peaking in September.

Lol, yeah I get a big kick out of the game day thread on these boards. Some of those guys are ready to commit Hari-Kari after a 3 and out. It’s a long season and like all NFL teams, there will be highs and lows. The super bowl champ every year always has adversity to overcome, then proves their championship quality by overcoming that adversity. Let’s hope the Cowboys are that team this year.

One play at a time.
One quarter at a time.
One game at a time.

I'm reminded of the 2007 offense but that one was less consistent, probably because the runningbacks were Marion Barber and Felix Jones instead of Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard. Not to mention Dak in his 4th season is probably better than Romo was in his 5th.

A huge part of the improved performance is having a considerably better WR and TE groups. I like Strum a lot and would assume he mentions that in the article?

After our first loss this year....it will happen, lol.

You mean they're related???

Ya know, I like stats, my favorite stats are the ones I make up to support a weak position but I like them just the same.

But I don't need stats to tell me this offense looks better and is harder to handle for a D. Now, these are not good teams but they're NFL teams just the same. The offense has the look of being in control and knowing what they want to do and doing it.

So far, the offensive strategy has been working really well and we haven't seen what Kellen the Young's tactics are when it is not, that's what I am waiting to see and we will see that. That's when Norv Turner showed his stuff with his tactics and helped build that confidence from his players. So far, it's all working but what happens when it's not?

I highlighted a key phrase above from you coach. It is reminding us that we haven’t seen yet how Moore reacts to being consistently thwarted. It WILL happen at some point. That’s when we find out what he’s made of.

The differences in the first three games are striking. Almost double in every passing stat. The thing I like about this years team is I actually believe that we are scoring a TD once we get inside the 20. The previous 2 years.... I never really had that feeling.

Start of last season, we had a WR corp that was one of the poorest in the league and the worst we’d had in decades... This season ours are one of the best, if not the best.
Also our OL looks back to being dominant after being a bit hit and miss the last two years.

I know bashing the front office is in style, but you have to give them credit for quickly turning around our WR corps. Devin Smith could end up being a huge steal.

"Total offensive TDs after 3 games: 2018= 4. 2019= 13" This is what has me excited and is what has elevated Dak's game.
