2019 Draft Has a Trend to Fail

If you go back and look at the Cowboys drafts under Jerry Jones without Jimmy in full control or Bill Parcells. When the Cowboys have not had a 1st round pick, they have been awful.

Kivika Pittman, Sherman Williams, Dwayne Goodrich, Quincy Carter, and the 2009 trade down disaster pick of Jason Williams. The Cowboys usually take gambles in these type drafts and have failed. Carter had drug problems, Goodrich was off the field issues, Sherman Williams off the field issues, Pittman was late bloomer hot and cold and was scout as hit or miss.

What has me worried is that trend of risk taking has continued in the 2nd round ie Sean Lee 1st round talent LB with knee injury in college, Bruce Carter same as Lee, and Jaylon Smith same as Lee. You hit on one out of 3. Jury is still out on Randy Gregory drugs problems, Demarcus Lawrence off the field suspensions in college and the pros keeping him without a long term contract, Gavin "no block" Escobar, etc.

Drafting is a hit or miss proposition but you want to be get better results ie. Jimmy Johnson had Steve Wiseniewski traded to Raiders for draft pick Daryl Johnston (both were Pro Bowlers), Alexander Wright (bust), Dixon Edwards, Jimmy Smith (Pro Bowler Jaguars), Darren Woodson, and then was fired after drafting 2 starters in the 1995 Super Bowl Kevin Williams and Darrin Smith. They all were 2nd round picks. That's 7 out of 8 NFL starters in the 2nd round.

So I hope Will McClay gets Jerry not to chase risk but draft a solid football player that can start at a position of need. No more on legged linebackers, players with drug problems, or players that can't keep their hands to themselves. As someone said "if you have a little problem before you get money, it becomes a big problem with money".

actually our drafts the last 5 season have been in the top of the nfl, period,..its been trending up and im assuming with no 1st rounder they wont get cute and take risks this go around..i trust them to go after the right guys as we are closer to having most positions locked in so they have less needs to fill and can focus on what I feel is priority's Safety, TE, and DT with very little developmental or fill in guys..Later rounds maybe a slot Receiver or a RB that can be used like WR someone that can fill both Beasly and Tavon type role on offense.. so those are 4 positions we can totally go after specific roles..

can anyone check our successful rate based on the 5th round pick but with no third rounder? how do we do with those drafts, just in case theres a trade

I could see a small trade up but not much
I’ve always liked going after the BPA and if that means one less pick later, so be it
I’m a quality over quantity guy

Yeah, especially when the first pick is late in the 2nd. Draft capital isn't as expensive and there's going to be some real value in the mid 2nd, even if it's just a handful of spots ahead of our normal pick.

We should have two 4ths when conditional picks come in for Hitchens. Our 2nd + current 4th would give us 4-5 spots in trade value. Eagles are actually right there where trade value lies, but Houston has picks both before and right after them. AFC team, that's who we'd end up dealing with probably if we did it.

Two years ago you got Chido at the end of round 2. Last year they were looking at Connor Williams and Justin Reid in round 2. Reid ended up falling into round 3 so he would have been available at the bottom of round 2. You should probably be hoping for a comparable player to Reid or Chido with that 2nd round pick.

Justin Reid brother will be a free agent and his secondary coach is on the Cowboys staff (as of today:))

I hate that we don't have a first round pick, but it's not the worst year for it to happen. We are a young team with a good number of franchise players at the necessary positions (QB, WR, LT, Pass Rusher, etc.). There's also good draft depth at our weak positions, particularly at TE. I want the Cowboys to just sit back and let the draft come to them.

We start with a late 2nd round pick. How good could it be. We need to find some gems.

This team is one of the best drafting teams in the league... maybe the best. They now understand what type of players they want and how they fit into their system.

Talking about this franchise drafting shante carver and Sherman Williams is lunacy. That is a lifetime ago. This braintrust drafts completely different from how it did then. I absolutely trust the FO now to bring in the right guys. They don’t miss much.

The ability to take risk is an advantage for our team. Jaylon and Gregory both played this year. I think both still have only 2 years of accrued seasons. (Per Overthecap.)

You have to be willing to look long term, but that too is an advantage we have.

Don't believe in trends unless there is science behind it.

I remember when Steven Jackson landed right in our lap
And he grew up a Cowboys fan and soooo wanted to play here. IIRC, that was the Julius Jones draft instead.

I remember watching that draft and stoked we had him sitting there, and then......................they traded out of the spot. LOL Julius Jones looked like he was worth it at first but he was just a flash in a pan.

If we could get a chido quality player I’d be pretty happy

I think so too. Maybe if someone falls into early second we jump up like we did for tank
