2021-2023 all over again

Oh I agree.

I was not in favor of signing him to a new contract for the amount they gave him, but they did so they are stuck with it.

This is just the first year of his new contract so I don't see Jerry releasing him until 2027, especially with the huge salary cap hit in 2025 and 2026 as you pointed out.

Even if they find a great quarterback in the draft over the next couple of years, it would be better to keep Dak as a backup than it would to release him since they would be paying for him either way.
I think the Cowboys should actively start searching for Dak’s replacement. This QB class appears weak, so maybe it won’t be in this class, but the Cowboys should be hoping to find one that is capable of replacing Dak in this draft, the next or off the scrap heap/QB carousel.

Then let Dak demand a trade out and find a place to ship him for picks.

Feel what ever way you want.... that's the beauty of internet anonymity. I'm nothing more than a faceless, nameless online person, someone you don't know and will never know personally. So why would anyone give a flip what you think? I could use Henry VIII as an avatar and it wouldn't mean anything more than if I chose to use My Little Pony or Martin Luther King.

The avatar has nothing to do with Jerry getting under my skin - he's running a clown show, so the avatar seemed appropriate. I'm surprised you failed to see the correlation.

I saw the correlation, just funny. Kinda let me down, I always pictured you as a tough, experienced and knowledgeable man that doesn't take crap for anyone, now all I see is a clown.

My post was not about Dak, but the team and salary cap situation in general.

Regarding Dak though, he is going to heavily impact the salary cap with dead money regardless of when he leaves the Cowboys even if even finishes out his current contract because they added voidable years on to the end to spread out the cap hit and those will accelerate.

I do not expect the Cowboys to release Dak until they have another franchise quarterback (interim or rookie) to replace him, so that will likely end up influencing when (or if) they ultimately release him (or trade him with his approval).

Because the following year's contract is guaranteed a few days after the start of a new NFL season (in March), at best they will absorb a full season of salary (plus remaining upfront money of course) hit if they release him before his contract ends.

On the bright side, if they are going to release him before his contract ends, we know it will most likely happen between the end of the season and March (depending on when the new NFL season starts) so they can avoid an extra season of dead money salary which becomes guaranteed.

At this point, the smart money move for the Cowboys is to start trying to find Dak's replacement and if they do at some point, then they bench Dak rather than release him since it will likely cost them more in salary cap space to release him (due to accelerated remaining upfront money) than keep him as insurance.
They aren't releasing Dak anytime soon. They'd have him "retire".
Regardless of when you move on from Dak you are better off pushing his cap costs forward then rolling that cap amount into the next season.
Dallas doesn't spend all their available cap anyway.
You are better off having that cap now and have it available next year.

This was all procedural and it was written to make fans dumber. Allows team to say well Dak costs 90m we can't do anything but in reality, it is 52M cap hit.

Pushing 40M forward seems scary because it adds to dead money but realistically you also have 40M cap cash so it is a wash. The only thing that changes is your flexibility and ability to access that money if you deem fit.

Given Dak's injury history and age they should.
But they won't.
They have very few assets and will try to use those to improve the roster overall.
They will take a stab at a low round QB for depth.

If anything they are intentionally getting worse at QB behind Dak.
But that's not all bad, because the easiest way to get Dak's replacement is go 2-15 and draft the guy.
That rookie contract QB will allow you the time and money to move on from Dak.

It helps to know a persons background before making assumptions

You're right....I just thought you were tough, experienced and knowledgeable....guess I was wrong. Thanks for setting me straight.
Is it impossible for someone to be all that AND have a sense of humor?

Maybe I should find some more clowns since they seem to offend you so severely.

There's plenty around here already. Most have a sense of humor. And, it is very possible. I know many that fit the bill, i gave you to much credit. Takes a big man to admit they are not. I'll give you that.

I find it quite odd that someone temporarily deciding to use a clown for an avatar on an internet message board is such a triggering event.

I look at is a moment of humor while you are looking at it as pussification. I don't get it, but I don't post here to influence the minds of the masses.

I'm pretty sure I have told you in the past that I respect you so I can't quite wrap my head around why you have gone on the attack. But whatev's. I don't post here to please you or anyone else.

Yeah, you won't let it go...I paid you a compliment, you said you weren't, what I thought you were, I apologized, but yet, here you are..and if you take me calling you tough, experienced and knowledgeable as an attack, you must have taken it as a barb as opposed as what it was meant to ne.

Adam Clayton Powell, quote: 'Crap, gd, I think I can, I can! Del Mar College here just told them to get off our Campus!

Not a Cowboys fan!

Sounded like you were doing the opposite.... If I misunderstood that's on me.
