Johnson is a very good FS and will get a big contract. We need a FS badly and guys like Justin Simmons and Anthony Harris will either be franchised or signed by their teams, who have the cap space for it. Johnson is more realistic to switch teams. You’re saying releasing Tyron (who can barely make it through 10 or so games) to upgrade one of the most important positions on our defense makes the team worse?

Also, no starting Alabama CB is a late day 3 prospect. That’s ridiculous. Jobe is predicted to go in the 3rd round. Tufele being a 3T? Fine. We need one of those, unless you’re ok with anointing Trysten Hill as your starter.

This may not be your cup of tea, but it in no way makes the team worse off, and I’d be willing to wager my evaluation is better than yours.

-Tyron is still one of the best starting LT's in the entire league. Due to his back he typically misses 3 games a season, not 6 as you claim.
-There are other safeties who are expected to depart, Marcus Williams is one of them who is younger and the better player.
-Cause Jobe plays at Alabama he is a good player? He may not even be a top 20 corner in this class and you have him in the 3rd rd?

Williams is only 1 year younger than Johnson. Johnson rates out as a better coverage safety than Williams. I’m not married to the idea of Johnson, but rather spending our resources to get a top tier FS in FA because we’re not going to find much help in the draft. Either of those guys would make our defense much better.

We’ve shown that we can make do without Tyron at LT. It’s not like Dalton was on his butt every play and he was able to play up to his ability with the makeshift OL. In order to sign a big name FA, we’re going to have to make some tough decisions. Releasing Tyron creates the necessary cap space. Alternatively, you can restructure contracts and create extra room.

I’ve watched Josh Jobe play several games and he is a good CB. He wouldn’t be starting on a NC team if he wasn’t. I’m going by pretty much all the draft services who predict he will go in the 3rd round.

A cap ceiling of $195M will put us at $47.5M under the cap. Tyron Smith release adds $5.6M. Chris Jones another $2M. Lawrence and Martin can be restructured to create more space as needed. That should give us around $60-65M in potential cap space. I’m assuming we don’t resign guys like A. Smith, Awuzie, J. Lewis.

Dak Prescott - 2021 cap hit around $37M

John Johnson III (FS) - 5/$75M, $15M 2021 cap hit.

That should allow enough money for a backup QB, a swing OT, and Gerald McCoy. Making Jaylon a 6/1 cut frees up $7.2M to sign our draft picks in the summer.

Draft

10. Zaven Collins or Micah Parsons. Would preferably take Collins in a trade back, but I’m not going to try to predict any trades.

44. Jay Tufele, DT, USC. Big and athletic DT who can be productive playing either 1 or 2 gaps.

75. Josh Jobe, CB, Alabama.
Good length and good fit for zone coverage.

This improves the middle of the defense which is key for what Dan Quinn likes to run. It moves LVE back outside where he was more productive. We’d be spending big for a FS, but it’s a very important position and one we probably won’t find any immediate help in the draft. DT group is overall better with McCoy, Gallimore, Hill, Tufele, and A Woods.

So let’s get this straight. You’re releasing Tyron to save a measley 5.6 m and have Cam Irving play LT? LOL wow!

Fair enough about wanting a quality Safety, but I will disagree that the OL was just fine without Tyron Smith. Who did they beat this season? The OL was ranked 25th in the entire league. The better teams exposed the Cowboy OL.

Jobe has issues in his game, there is a reason why teams went after him over Patrick Surtain. The Bama Safeties were average at best, too. The draft network big board, which is pretty good, but each boards around the net will have different opinions, have Jobe rated the 240 best prospect. Could he make it to rd 3? I guess it's possible, but he isn't viewed as a future starter on the next level.

So is Dak franchised in your scenario?

IMO any new deal for him, that he signs, his cap hit will be in the mid 20's year 1. They will push the bigger cap hits down the road.

Not franchised. With shorter contracts I think the cap hits end up being more balanced so as to avoid a astronomic number the last year. But they can always extend after 2-3 years if they do it that way.
