England deserved that. What was that? The Switzerland plan to beat Argentina? Let them dominate possession and hope they don't score. For most of the 2nd half, England looked like Cape Verde against Spain.
Yeah absolutely brilliant game plan. Go negative with 30 mins remaining. Argentina just erased a 2-0 deficit in less time against Egypt; what made them think the 1-0 lead was safe?

I was rooting for England, but with that said, I'm happy to see Spain/Argentina. I think Argentina is a tougher match-up for Spain, but Spain is a Boa Constrictor

Yeah, mentality. Argentina go behind regularly and just get better. England went ahead and panicked. From the moment we went 1-0 up we sat deeper and deeper and allowed Argentina's technically superior players take over the game. As soon as it went 1-1 there was only going to be one outcome.

I really could not believe what I was seeing. The plan England went to after taking the 1 goal lead has literally not worked for any team against Argentina for the entire tournament. You can't give Argentina exclusive possession with that much time remaining. You could see it coming.

Pretty much, yes. You have to do more than just sit on what you have for 30 minutes when youre up against world class creative players.
Kane should have been withdrawn on the 80 minute mark and more pace needed up front to stop the wave after wave of attack from Argentina. Quite clear an attacking outlet was needed.
I'm very disappointed in the manager not realising that.

Englands manager was horrible. defending for so long? he did it against mexico and it worked because mexico does not have the same quality players argentina does.

He manages like he has no good players and parked the bus. Rashford on at min 94? what?

so was this the soccer equivalent of going prevent too early?
That’s what they’ll say. The reality is one team had Lionel Messi - and a recent track record of having to go right to the wire to win tournaments - and the other didn’t.

England had a great tournament, but don’t buy the ‘we threw it away’ line.

My worry is that they’ve now got so much quality that when they do eventually win a major tournament, they might go on a bit of a streak of them.

That pass from Messi to go up 2-1 was a thing of perfection. He’s a 5’7” dominator. Argentina all the way.

Told you!

…doesn’t make it true though.

England are an excellent side; Argentina are an exceptional one. That’s the story of the match.

That, and I know there's no shame in losing to Argentina, but we had them. All we had to do was not go basically prevent.
