Bum wanted to get rid of Landry, and told Jerry he would do it before selling the team to him, but Jerry declined and said he would do it and take the backlash. Love the guy or Hate the guy, Jerry is one of the most stand up men in all of sports.

It was silly how people said that Jerry disrespected Landry. He immediately went to meet with him to tell him in person. How many new owners are going to travel out of town to where the coach is playing golf to meet with him? How else was Jerry supposed to do it?

Disrespect would be firing him on the phone.

firing a guy on the phone while on vacation is something he evolved into

Well it was a touchy subject. Dallas had never had a different HC, and in the course of a day, they had a new owner and a new coach. Not to mention that Texas wasnt really a place that accepted change too lightly.

Hate the guy. Well a deep dislike.

I'll never like Jerry. Some people you just don't care for. He's one of mine.

Yes, but even today people claim that they hate Jerry because of how he handled firing Landry.

They were irritated that Rob Ryan was on vacation in the first place. They were expecting him to be available at the end of the season. It appears that he went on the immediate vacation just to irritate them.

I believed back then, and still do today. Many so-called fans use this as a reason to dislike the team when they are not in the SB hunt.
I came across many fans that love them when winning, but use this reason to not like them when they are losing.

It was time for Landry to go, though few people thought it at the time.

Someone actually cares about how he fired Rob Ryan?????

True. IIRC, Landry's contract was up after 86 or 87 season. People were calling for his head at the time. But Bum Bright and Tex Schramm couldn't bring themselves to fire him, as the team was going up for sale soon. So they kept Landry, and figured a new owner would fire him.

I was glad jerry had bought the team from Bum Bright. He had no real interest in the franchise. I hated that Landry was fired but I always put myself in Jones shoes if I just put down that much of my money on a team I'm going to bring in the people I want. Jerry knew they had to win and win in a hurry he had everything riding on the line and failure was not an option

I was 9 yrs old and terrified that jerry would move the Cowboys outta dallas for some reason lol. I was later devastated with the walker trade but got over it lol
