Just saw this stat. Opponents have gained 295 before even being touched. That means 4-5 yards per run play before even being touched. Just a WOW! What did we do in the preseason? Jerry said they have to address the holes. I think those holes got wider. Not sure who we're missing.

Its not all on DTs getting blown off the ball either. A lot of these yards are on failure to secure the edges. Its not even the yardage that worries me, it the number of ways teams are attacking this defense with success. You can fix problems, but where do you even start right now?

Stop 2-gapping everything and get in the backfield.

The entire way this organization tries to defend the run is backwards. It is a death sentence.

when your D line is blown off the ball, nothing else is really going to matter. and this was happening to the DEs as well if not as bad

That's the Zimmer defense I tried to warn against.

Picking right up where it left off 20 years ago giving up 200+ rushing.

When people said they would rather have a few less turnovers, but stop the run, I tried to warn that with Zimmer you would get a lot less turnovers and still not stop the run.

Here we are.

That's all on the coaches....and that's scheme. Read and react defenses have always been a bad idea. Very easy to manipulate.

Yeah at some point they have to get aggressive and just focus on getting penetration. They'll give up some chunk plays that way, but they're already doing that with 2 gap run defense and soft zone coverage in pass defense. At least go down fighting for some of those negative plays to give your team a chance.

This is what they always did with Marinelli and mostly with Quinn.

They do it because the old way of two-gapping and stopping the run first does not work. It hasn't for 20 years.

THE DL TALENT IS NOT THERE.

no matter what scheme you use

you did..

People will overanalyze this stuff but the biggest issue is we have the worst grouping of DTs in the NFL.

Yes, we can talk about the LBs youth and the edge guys but when your DTs stink, I don't care who you have playing edge or LB, you won't be all that consistent stopping the run.

This was a massive mistake by Jerry this offseason. He continually refuses to acknowledge the importance of the DT position. Oh he used a 1st round pick on a 1T but when it was obvious he was way too raw, the Cowboys should have acquired some insurance this offseason. Instead, they let their only other competent DT, Hankins, leave in FA.
