3-3-5 Defense

It doesn’t take running a 3-3-5 to use him as a blitzer.
I know...but blitzing him from a bunch of different spots out of a 3-3-5 makes the defense less predictable. So if he can effectively do that, the 3-3-5 could be more effective than the standard 4-2 at times.

And, again, that can still happen by using the 3-3-5 situationally, and of course they could move him around even in a 4-3 if they chose. I just think using 3-3-5 as the base would weaken the front 7 against the run, and maybe give the QB more running lanes if pressured.

Not really, no.
If he is consistently used as a blitzer there isn't much difference than a 4-2-5 at all, no matter which gap he rushes through. --4 DL can twist and stung and move around much the same.
If however they drop him and play a real 3-3-5 and mix in blitzes it could be more tricky. --much like a zone blitz where you drop a DT or DE into short zones and blitz 3.
But again in the NFL a 3 man DL is a recipe for getting gashed in the run game.

Almost any QB will audible to run or screen versus a 3-3-5.
The 3-3-5 is meant for Air Raid/Spread teams that utilize 4 WRs to spread the field and force a defense to cover to both sidelines.
It is not meant for NFL teams that regularly employ 6 blockers.

The NFL used it more heavily against pass heavy teams. Teams like the Saints or spread based Eagles under Chip Kelly.
But with the emergence of more running based squads it is likely to decrease in usage.

It's still a solid prevent type defense tho a traditional dime 3-2-6 might be more in vogue unless you have a Telvin Smith/Myles Jack type LB that is basically a bigger safety.

Yea, I don't think they should use 3-3-5 as a base lol.

I think we'll be seeing more of the dime 3-2-6 looks this year. We've got oodles of talent at CB and I don't think the team will hesitate to break it out in passing situations.

Its much easier for a LBer to blitz into a different gap than where he aligns than to run a twist/stunt. That's the biggest difference.

Yes, you're still rushing 4 guys the same as a base nickel, but you can be a lot more flexible when the 4th rusher is coming from one of 3 different spots.

That's the defense that colleges and the seahawks have used with success against the RPO offenses.
Yes, perhaps, but dont compare Richard Sherman, Earl Thomas, Kam Chancellor, Bobby Wagner to the garbage we have.
Heath? Byron? Chido? LOL

I like a 3-3-5 in today's NFL but not sure I like any defense that takes Sean Lee off the field.

We’ve seen this alignment from Rod before, but I really think it may very well be the best defensive scheme we can run this year...especially in the early part of the season before our DT’s are back and 100%. But even after that I think it may be the best way to get our best 11 on the field at the same time instead of the traditional nickel.

LB- Jaylon, LVE, Lee
Jaylon as the blitzer/playing close to LOS.

DB’s- Chido, Lewis, Brown, Woods and Jones (line them up however you’d like). Heath/Frazier would play on obvious running downs.

DE- DLaw, Crawford, Taco, and Ward
DT- Collins, Jones, Price
Irving can play both spots if/when he’s back.

Those 11 represent our best and most athletic defenders in my opinion, and would anyone really complain about seeing our 2nd DT less?

Do you think the proposed 3-3-5 would work, especially against the run? And any chance Rod actually tries something different like this on a consistent basis?
it requires the right personnel. based on this, its almost like a 3-4 defense, where one safety is probably in run support/pass support based on offensive alignment and his reads. the LB is blitzing based on recognition and read or just attack and force the play. I know some colleges use it, but not having the right personnel its very suspect against the run.

what I want to also see if we can have Gregory rush from a standup position almost like a 3-4 LB and we give offenses a 3-4 look.

i would rather run a 46 with creative blitzing and trap coverage behind it than a 3-3-5
