Green (Seymour started season inj.) 4
Wilfork 1

Chargers Starting DL
Castillo (yeah, he is now injured) 1.5

Williams 0

Steelers
Smith 1.5
Keisel 0
Hampton 0

Browns

Jets

Just thought it was interesting. Spears and Canty are doing what every other 3-4 DL is doing (with the exception of Green) as far as generating sacks.

How do we compare with those 3-4 teams in terms of total sacks?

3. Dallas
7. Patriots
7. Steelers
16. Chargers
29. Browns
30. Jets

Or in terms of totals...

Dallas - 26
Patriots - 25
Steelers - 25
Chargers - 19
Browns - 11
Jets - 9

Spears was a 1st rounder.

Wilfork and Warren were 1st rounders.

Hampton was a 1st rounder

Castillo was a 1st rounder. Olshansky was the 3rd pick in the 2nd round.

Ellis and Robertson were 1st rounders.

Our starting defensive linemen rarely play in dime/nickel situations. Green stays on the field in those situations for the Patriots (who don't rotate their defensive linemen nearly as much as we do), which gives him more opportunties for sacks.

Niceeeeeeee.

Its amazing to think they have 26 sacks though 9 games this year when you consider a few years ago they barely had 26 sacks a season.

Canty is gonna be a stud one day.

He is already a great run stopper and is starting to apply pressure to QBs more and more often.

I didn't really realize until just now how well we are doing.

Good job guys.

Players make the plays but to say schemes don't matter is just being foolish. We are pretty much playing with the same starters on D as last year yet we are pressuring the QBs much better in Wade's scheme.

I am sure that the scheme changes have helped, the defense is definately attacking much more. I think Ellis has to get his fair share of the credit, the defense was playing pretty decent last year before he went down. Not sure if it is a coincidence that it starting to improve this year when he came back full time. Adding Spencer and adding another years experience has helped as well Im sure.

I think you are both right.

Scheme has definitely helped and Ellis has been a stud in pressures and sacks.

Speaking of them both, still aggravating seeing Ellis dropping back in coverage :banghead:

A 3rd factor for the improvement is growth and maturity. We have a very young DLine that was still coming it to its own and are now starting to click.

The longer our defense plays Phillips 34 the more they attack and put pressure on the QB. I believe last year we had 37 sacks and now in 9 games we've already got 26 which is almost 3 sacks a game. With 7 games to go, we've got a chance to end up with 42-50 sacks. I also really like the different schemes we have begun to show in our front 7. From the information Breer provided in a separate posting, it really messed with the Giants and major contributor to their delay of penalty calls.

DLineman in a 3-4 defensive scheme who get 5 sacks have done a very good job. It is rare to see much more than that. If it happens, you've got someone with a hot hand, or an exceptional player.

And how many 3-4 teams drop their nose tackles into coverage???

It also helps our totals that we usually have good leads in the 4th qtr and the guys can tee off. I think looking at sacks only in the first half would be more informative on who really gets it done when the game is on the line.
