3-4 Needs to Be 86'd

If we're not going to play an agressive 3-4 then we need to scrap it! I'm just watching the game again and seeing Ellis and Ware screaming off the ends just makes one picture the possibilities if we went back to the 4 man line every down. Couldn't we move Spears inside with Fergi and rotate the other guys. Brady in the middle with Adoyele and Burnett or Carpenter outside. I think Adoyele would be more effective outside anyways. Maybe with a new coach next year, the 3-4 is scratched, despite what Jerry says.

I've wondered about this too. Maybe with a little more time they can crank it up though. Are we really that far in the hole to go back to the 4-3? You could even go Canty, Spears, Ratliff, Fergie as your DTs. Ellis and Ware on the ends w/a little Hatcher in on passing downs.

Yeah, the pass rush seems a lot more effective when both of those guys are rushing. Unfortunately most of the time it's just one or the other, or neither. When only one of them goes, they are the only ones getting pressure, and the QB has a ton of room to maneuver away from them and to buy time. When they both come, there is pressure from 2 sides, and the QB can't get quite as comfortable and doesn't have as much space to move around in. The DL isn't really getting a push, they're basically just a wall at the line, so Ware and Ellis need to both be going after the QB on the same play more often. At least in my opinion.

Well, it does depend on the type of blitzes you are speaking of. All out, bringing safeties or cornerbacks or both would tend to be more unsuccessful. Done correctly and in moderation, it can do wonders for a team's aggressiveness.

We don't need to scrap the 3-4. We need to scrap the def. coordinator, Zimmer. His the reason why this defense isn't aggresive enough in their blitzing and in their attacking.

Zimmer has brought his 4-3 bend but don't break philosophy over into the 3-4. It just doesn't work that way though. Its like trying to mix oil with water.

If we get rid of Zimmer and hire someone who knows how to effectively use all the talent we have on defense, you will see this defense soar into new territory. With Zimmer, its just not possible. He runs this defense as though there was no talent and is afraid of being creative and risky in bringing pressure. Frankly, I hope Zimmer goes. It will do wonders to our defense.

LOL... yeah, makes me "laugh out loud" everytime I ACTUALLY sit here and think for a sec how you can have Roy Williams, Terence Newman, Demarcus Ware, Greg Ellis, Aaaron Glenn, Jason Ferguson, Marcus Spears, Bradie James, Akin Ayodele, Kevin Burnett, 6'5" Pat Watkins, Anthony Henry, Chris Canty etc etc etc and still be playing as a defense with personelle such as this should be mother ****** playing like

Zimmer runs the defensive plays the way he understand Parcells wants him to do. The reality seems to be that our LBs can't get pressure on the QB. Last year our DL (Glover and Ellis) put enough pressure on the QBs to garnet 11 sacks between them. Well Glover's gone and Ellis is now an OLB (and still leads the team in sacks with around 3; Ware follows I think with 2.5). Of course Parcells plays a less aggressive defense then we had hoped for or as our defensive players aren't playing as well as Parcells had hoped. It's entirely possible that our young 2nd year starters (Spears/Canty/Ware) haven't shown/made the step we hoped for & rookie FS Watkins is still a developmental who needs to get it sooner rather then later. On the other hand, some of our older defensive vets have also let us down occassionally.

Get rid of Zimmer and bring in a real 3-4 DC and things will be much difference. Zimmer needs to go even if we did switch back to a 4-3.

How about beating a team man to man? Regardless of our DC, Canty and Spears have not lived up to the hype this year. We can only do so much when 2 of the 3 down linemen are ineffective.

I am continually underwhelmed and appalled at the performance of our defense given all the high draft picks, stars, free agents, DBs, and hype.
Its quite disgusting that we can't get pressure on the QB or stop the big play downfield....STILL.
Our defense should be elite, or at least top 3 and it's pretty darn average.
