3 ELITE positions to help you win a championship (Dallas has two)

The three positions I think you need to put a franchise in prime position to win a Super Bowl:

Quarterback: Tony Romo, I believe, is an elite quarterback. He's a top 7 QB in my book, and he's never had an elite offensive line to help him. In today's NFL, you need an elite quarterback to get you to the promised land, UNLESS you have a special, special defense like the 85 Bears or the 2000 Ravens.

Elite pass-rusher: It's obvious that Demarcus Ware is arguably the best defensive player in the NFL. He didn't have an elite year last season, but who can blame him? He didn't get much help from Spencer and Jenkins, the two players who regressed tremendously in 2010.

Cornerback: I know I may get some criticism for this, but you need an elite, shutdown cornerback in today's NFL. Look at the Green Bay Packers. They have Charles Woodson and Tramon Williams. It's rare to have two solid CB's like the Packers, but most teams don't have ONE elite corner. Look at the Jets. Do they have any great players on defense besides Revis? Because the shutdown CB can essentially take away a part of the football field, it makes things easier for everybody else on defense. The Cowboys don't have an elite CB. Newman isn't even close. Asomugha would allow Jenkins to have less pressure on him after a horrific year. You can combine that with Scandrick playing in a contract year, and you could have a good situation. The wildcard position is safety, if we could release Newman, break the bank for Nnamdi, and get a hometown discount with Huff, the Cowboys could be onto something. Abram Elam could be a nice option at SS as well.

So the Cowboys have 2/3 important positions in my opinion. Nnamdi is the missing piece. He'll make EVERYONE better on defense.

#1 QB trumps all. Without an elite QB, your chances of winning the SB in todays game are slim at best.

#2 Front Office. GM, HC etc.

#3 Still RB. I know the league has shifted to using numbers at RB and passing more. But whoever is on the field for any particular snap at RB, still impacts the game more than any other player after QB.

#4 Weak side pass rusher.

After that there's a fairly large gap and most of the other players impact he game similarly. But I'd still take Probowl level players at these positions next in line:

WR1, CB1, NT, WR2, CB2

So if I were fortunate enough to have as many as 8 probowl level players, I'll take them right here.

I don't know about that.

You could say that for any position. What about LT then? If no ones blocking the blind side, your QB will get killed. Or center? If the QB has every snap go over his head, then he's going to get killed.

RB is important for a team obviously because you need one to run the ball, but it's not a position where you need elite talent to win a superbowl and neither is WR.

I'm a fan of Rbs and was one when I played, but no way it is one of the 5 most important positions...where you need an absolute elite one to win.
Just look at the recent SB winners.

I was just naming three elite positions you need to win a Super Bowl, importance wise.

Witten is obviously an elite player at his position, but I didn't think TE was a top 3 important position.

I'm not sure the Saints had an elite pass rusher or an elite corner. Give me an elite Head Coach, elite QB and good quality depth on both sides of the ball and I'll take my chances.

That is how the saints won. Of course I think by chance a fair number of their Defensive players had career years under a great DC, but they got it done. You look at the last dozen or so SB winners outside of a few like the Ravens and Bucs that won with over whelming Defenses it was mostly teams with top QBs and very good defenses.

Woodson may not be a shutdown corner right now, he's still solid enough where you can combo him with a young, playmaking CB in Tramon Williams. They don't have one ELITE corner, but they have two very solid CB's which is almost, if not as good as having one elite CB.

And the point of the OP was that you need an elite CB. Having 2 or 3 good CBs is completely different than having 1 elite. And I'd argue that neither Romo nor Rodgers are elite. Only Manning and Brady are elite.

Aaron Rodgers is elite. Romo, I believe, was playing at an elite level in 2009. This year is big for him.
