I understand the rust factor. Mental sharpness is important to execution. So is the mental/physical toughness factor, in that a team that bulls and fights its way into the game against the Cowboys may very well have been tempered in the process and be a tough and ready opponent.
At the same time, it's not like the Cowboys won't be practicing. They should be weightlifting a lot. Doing Cardio, and drilling drilling drilling. They should be fixing weaknesses and scripting to their strengths. Practice makes perfect.
I just feel that for the knicked up players in particular, the extra time is more important than 40 snaps against Washington. Columbo's anke, Romo's thumb, Gurode's knee, Newman's leg, Ellis's achiles and general energy levels etc.
Glenn is different since his rust is a bunch thicker. I'd like him to test his leg a bit against Washington, just to get his timing at real game speed back.
The difference for me is the "controlled" environment. Run TO against Newman in practice. That is pretty good competition and should keep you sharp. The difference is, the guy across from you isn't trying to kill you, which should keep you fresh and ready for when it truly matters.
And I know it goes against everything to not do everything to beat a division rival like the Commanders, but health and fresh legs is a rare gift this time of year and could make all the difference. I couldn't believe Brady was in the game against Miami today in the 2nd half........wow. He had a great first half, and could have come out, but he stuck in there and had a subpar 2nd half for his standards. What if he'd have been dinged up?
