First of all, I really don't think Dallas will draft an OT on the first day. I think Pettiti, Tucker, a FA pickup or another late round prospect will compete for the RT position. This leaves OLB and FS as the main positions Dallas will focus on in the draft. Since LB's are key to the 3-4 defense being effective, I think Dallas should continue adding depth the first two rounds. In the 3rd round, simply go after the best FS left on the board. Unless FS Ko Simpson or Jason Allen actually fall to our pick in the 2nd....highly unlikely.
1. OLB Manny Lawson/Thomas Howard/Bobby Carpenter
I think these three rookies would easily be an ugrade over Singleton and Fujita. Obviously, Lawson would simply be the ideal with his size and speed on the outside. I prefer Howard over Carpenter, simply because I think he'll be faster and more athletic getting to the ball. You need to be a fast S.O.B. to rush the QB and or drop back into coverage time and time again. I just think Howard would simply cover more ground than Carpenter and more consistently. At 6-2 7/8 240lbs, Howard is actually taller than highly touted Chad Greenway and probably faster too...we'll find out at the combine. I want speed on the outside when dropping into coverage and Lawson and Howard have lots of it.
2. ILB Kai Parham...FS Ko Simpson/Jason Allen
Parham is the ideal pick here for me, because he's already played in the 3-4 in college. I really don't want anyone else here, unless Ko Simpson or Jason Allen miraculously drop to us like I said before. Parham is big, strong, fast, likes to hit and would replace Dat Nguyen perfectly inside. Some might feel this is a wasted pick though, because Kevin Burnett will likely move inside next to Bradie James. The only problem is, can we rely on Burnett staying healthy over a 20 game schedule? Another good reason to add a ILB like Parham is in a 3-4 defense, you should also have the ability to run a 2-5-4 on passing downs...like the Steelers showed in the SB.
3. FS Pat Watkins/Daniel Bullocks/Anthony Smith...OLB Kamerion Wimbley
Dallas needs to upgrade the FS position and this is where they should do it. There are a lot of good safeties in this draft and very few stand out right now. Huff and Simpson, seem to be the front runners at FS. However, few teams draft a safety in the first round to begin with. I think Jason Allen, Darnell Bing, Bernard Pollard and possibly Greg Blue will get picked somewhere in the 2nd round. This should leave the three players above still hanging around in the 3rd IMO. If Simpson or Allen fall to our 2nd pick, I wouldn't mind getting someone like Wimbley. He was a DE in college, but at 6-3 245 he could possibly play ILB or line up across from Ware on passing downs. I'm sure he's too slow to play OLB, but could be a great situational player rushing the QB.
Just 3 draft picks could make all the difference in talent and depth on our defense.
