3 Things that may put the Cowboys in the playoffs / 3 Things that may doom their chances.

As I was driving in to work today, I started to mull over all the things that have me looking forward to the season vs. things that could possibly spell doom. I'll start positive:

1. Despite the diminished competition he has faced, I honestly believe Lance Dunbar might just be for real. And if he is, the tandem of he and a healthy Demarco Murray could be a devastating duo. Lance has sure hands, burst, and seems to have great vision.

2. Travis Frederick just might be the difference the Cowboy's needed to significantly improve their running game. I'm not just pointing to his technique or ability. Actually, I think the difference will be having a very smart guy making the presnap line calls. Add to that emergence of Lance Dunbar, and we might even rank Top 10 by the end of the season in the ground game.

3. The 4-3. This is not intended to second guess Rob Ryan; I think he is a great coach. The issue, aside from injuries, was the fact that the Cowboys simply did not have the DL's necessary to make that particular defensive work. Look at the DL"s of every successful 3-4 team out there and compare to what the Cowboys had, and I think it's fairly obvious why the Cowboys were not successful with it. Transversely, the 4-3 seems to actually be a better fit for what the Cowboys have now in terms of personnel, especially at Linebacker with Sean Lee and Bruce Carter. As a result of this switch, I see Demarcus Ware once again competing for the sack record and the Cowboys being a Top 10 Turnover team.

What could derail the season?

1. Injuries. I don’t need to expound here, considering what we saw last year. But I will point out that an injury at just about any position on this team could doom the team when you consider what is waiting behind many of our starters.

2. Coaching. I flip-flop on Jason. On one hand, I like the things he says, I like is demeanor, and I like his passion for the game (even if he comes across as robotic at times). On the other hand, the results he has garnered have been less than encouraging. Furthermore, while coach Callahan is probably the most qualified guy to call offensive plays, even over Jason, I don’t know what to expect. The mothership-kool-aid peddlers have sighted on several occasions that the Cowboys are being vanilla during preseason, so I'm not sure what to look for during these games that will give me confidence.

3. Tony Romo. He really is like a box of chocolates. Given the experience he has gained in the NFL up to this point, I would like to think he is the 1 guy you don’t have to worry about. But let’s face it, he has made some boneheaded moves at QB. For the most part, I have defended him; but there have been things he has done that I honestly had no idea how to begin to defend. Many apologist point to the abysmal offensive line he has had. That’s a fair point. But not all of his errors have come at times during duress and duress is not always a viable excuse, especially for your veteran QB. What makes Romo great can also sometimes make him look like a rookie. He doesn’t know when to give up on some plays and just simply throw the ball away. Hopefully, this year, we will see Romo play smart, even if it means punting the ball away.

So, what 3 things do you think could put this team in the playoffs this year and what 3 things could lead to another season of mediocrity?

3 things that put us in the playoffs: Sean Lee, Dez Bryant, and Tony Romo stay healthy all year long.
3 things that lead to mediocrity: Sean Lee, Dez Bryant, or Tony Romo get injured.

I only need 2.

better OL and health and this team is in. If those are not better than in 2012, this team is still 8-8.

Like i've been saying. If we can't do anything this year then we'll probably never do much with Garrett and Romo.

This has to be a big year. No excuse.

"But CATCH we're not great at every position." Please save it because there isn't 1 team in the league that is perfect and even if there is they can still be beat.

I am really high on Frederick. But in order to improve on last year and make noise in the playoffs both lines have to be much better, it all begins and ends in the trenches.

Nice OP. Agree except coaching is good enough to win. It's players who win although organization and coaching are vital over the long run.

Turnovers and RZ success as well as giving up 17-20 PPG at most are the big keys for me.

In Playoffs:
1) We're stacked at skill positions, It's up to the Offensive Line. It they play well, we have a great offense period.

2) Stay healthy on defense. If Ware, Lee, Carter, Ratliff, Spencer, and Church can stay healthy then LOOK OUT...

3) We added TWO very good defensive coordinators. Our defense will be better this year based on coaching alone. Rob was overrated and horrible...

Same OLD stuff:
1) We went into the off season needing huge upgrades on the offensive line. We could've used 4 position upgrades because we basically had one guy who could play. We added ONE interior lineman. He's been good, not stellar, in camp. There is no other way to describe this than saying it is simply amazing that we gave our franchise QB a 100+ million dollar contract, and we are protecting him with what could be the worst OL in football. There were too many options available during the last 7 months not to make more moves. On the flip side, I did like most of their play in Oakland last week, so we will see...

2) Same song and dance at the safety position. Matt Johnson was anointed to be the chosen one before he ever played one preseason game. That's how hungry Cowboys fans are for a proven guy at the position once dominated by Cowboys players. This is another place that made me scratch my head during the off season. There were plenty of possible solutions. The organization brought in a guy who has been an under achiever his entire career, and then drafted a guy who only played the position for one year in college. This could be the difference in 11-5 and 8-8.

3) Injuries. Bill Parcels used to tell his guys this, "Are you sure you want to come out of that huddle, because you never know who's going to go in it after you leave." Some of our guys need to play through injuries more often. Then we have guys who were injured during college, and now they are also fighting the injury bug in the NFL. Call it what you want. Unlucky, flukes, conditioning, or just part of the game. We need to find a way to escape bad injuries this year. If some of the same guys get injured, ie: Ratliff, Murray, Austin, Lee, Carter,,,, they need to be replaced next season. All NFL teams deal with injuries, but the good teams are deep enough to overcome this. Are we good enough, and deep enough to plug guys into starting positions when our injuries happen?

.
So if we again lose half the team to injury--so essentially playing with a different team--still no excuses?

red zone offense will determine how this season goes.

Absolutely this. As long as the defense stays healthy, I have no worries about that unit. But the disturbing lack of touchdowns last year needs to be fixed if we're to get to the playoffs and hopefully make some noise.

Massive keys injuries is really the only excuse this team and any team has. I feel like this board is smart enough that I don't have to clarify the obvious.

IN - Less than 6 other NFC teams win 12 or more games, for we are winning 11.

NOT IN - There is no scenario. Not gonna happen

If Lee was to get hurt again this season, I actually think we'd get by as long as everyone else on the defense is healthy. Not saying that side of the ball wouldn't suffer but Romo and Dez are probably the two players this team could ill afford to lose under any circumstance.

Bone head penalties have cost this team a magnitude beyond anything Romo has done. The fact that you refuse to address that says a lot about you

It may be obvious to you and me, but last year an awfully lot of people were saying no excuses after half the team went down.

I agree but Sean Lee is the BEST player on Defense and that includes Ware. If he plays all 16 he will lead the league in tackles. He is the leader on Defense and is in on virtually every tackle. The guy is smart, fast, and a great tackler....

Agreed.

As much as I like Lee, I think Carter could step in and be almost as good. Dez or Romo are both completely irreplaceable.

Thanks for reading! I included Coaching because it is their responsibility to ensure they get the best performance out of every player possible. I'm not sure Jason has done that. Maybe with some, but not all. Being a walk-around coach now, though, should give him more of an opportunity to do just that.
