Time for this week's after-action review...give me your 3 Ups and 3 Downs.

3 Ups
- The defense. Yes, we did lose the game, however, the defense only gave up two offensive touchdowns and two field goals, and one of the touchdowns came at the hands of a short field thanks to a Tony Romo interception. Rob Ryan, somewhat quietly, has our defense playing like a top 5 defense. In fact, we are #4 in the NFL in total defense, and we have the #1 rush defense in the NFL. Not too shabby at all.

- Laurent Robinson. I think we have a #3 WR now, who also looks to be a lot better than Patrick Crayton ever was. Yes, he has to run that slant a little better, but otherwise a very solid performance turned in by a guy we got off the scrap heap. I'm feeling good going forward about our WR corps.

- The offensive line. They played great, despite the game-ending sack. This is a unit that over time, and with experience, is going to be very, very good. Romo has a clean pocket more often than not. They still are leaving a lot out there on the field in the run blocking game, though.

3 Downs
- You can't have a list of downs without listing Tony Romo. Three turnovers that directly led to 21 Detroit points, 14 of which were giftwrapped and 7 that were surrendered by our defense after getting put on the field inside the red zone. I still believe in the guy, but you absolutely cannot make those throws, especially when you're trying to preserve what was a 24 point lead, then a 17 point lead, and then a 3 point lead. A pretty bad performance by our QB. No excuses this week at all.

- The running game. Arguably, one of the reasons we have to throw so much is because we can't move the football on the ground. We rank 26th in the NFL in rushing offense, and that's just not going to cut it. 1st or Top 5 is not necessary, but I would argue that we need to be at least around the 15 mark, in the top 50% of the league in rushing. It helps soften up the defense, makes it easier for the passing game, and controls the clock. Which brings me to my last down...

- Clock/Game Management. I believe in everything Jason Garrett is doing here at a leader and as a head coach. The culture of the team has changed -- no longer do you see hanging heads when the going gets tough, and I can honestly say that when the defense trots out there I'm confident that we're going to force a punt at the least, and at best get a three and out or a turnover. When Wade Phillips was here, 3rd and long meant a conversion. Not anymore. Our guys play their butts off for 60 minutes.

However, the management of the Lions game was pretty abysmal, and that's being nice. When you are up 27-3 midway or late in the 3rd quarter, and your defense is forcing errant throws by the opposing QB and doing a great job containing the best WR in the NFL, there is absolutely no reason to be chucking the ball around. Run the ball, throw short, safe passes, and if you get a 4th down you put the ball in the hands of the best punter in the NFL and let him do his coffin corner thing. Flip the field position and let your defense go to work. EVEN if the defense gives up a TD, the Lions would have to go the length of the field and STILL score 3 more times to lead or tie the game, and by then they would run out of time -- and that's assuming that your offense, which has already put up 27 points at ease doesn't score anymore. I cannot say enough how frustrated I am this morning with the game management from yesterday after cooling off through the night. Not a good showing from a Coach that many around the league have lauded for his football smarts. Lets hope that Jason sees it as well, and improves in the future.

Good stuff casmith.

I have to be honest though. I only read your 3 ups. I didn't read the rest. I still can't stand anything negative. :(

Hos made a great choice in making you a MOd...love your takes. Question: how/when will Red reel Tony in? This crap can't continue: can it?

co-signed
great takes

the world is not ending if JG and romo can REALLY learn from this experience

will they.... who knows

Agree with the post - to me the running game thing is even more basic. We need a SHORT YARDAGE running game. To win in this league you need to be able to pound out a yard on the ground when you need it. This team can't, and hasn't for years now, likely since Barber's first breakout year, and before that, what, Emmitt?

When we find a consistent running attack, we'll have less mistakes in the air.

When you throw the ball 47 times and you're not doing the Tom Brady checkdown game that they did against the Jaguars in the playoffs in 2007 (Brady was like 28/32 and 24 of the passes were dump downs...something absurd like that), you're going to have interceptions, and it doesn't matter if you've got Brady, Rodgers, Brees, Rivers, Romo, Manning, whoever. More throws = more chances for picks.

Hopefully we can find out why we can't move the ball on the ground during the bye. And I'm not asking for 100 yard performances every week, but we need to be able to run for much better than we have been. 3.4 yards per carry needs to increase.

Edit: perhaps the offense missed Fiammetta this weekend more than we thought?

I really think Dallas could have kneeled into 3 and outs, punted and won the game.

The only way they win is if Tony does what he did.

He thought the lead was safe and started acting like an idiot.

How can you NOT be impressed with Robinson. He's got to still be learning the playbook, but he knows where he has to go and what to do. Sure he's running mostly simple routes, but he's running them well and getting himself open (the INT was a slightly bad pass but mostly a good play by the defender...we'd applaud Newman if he had that INT).

I was so worried about Suh and Van Den Bosch and ultimately, they got little pressure on Romo. That Oline is coming together. They still need work on run blocking, but in pass blocking, its getting better. A bigger (literally) test to come vs NE, so lets hope they build on this performance.

I hate to say it, but I missed Marion Barber on that 4th & Goal at the 1. Barber had a knack for running hard and timing his leaps. Felix looked like he thought he could just bull his way through the line. I think most folks agree that if he leaps...he's in. It's just hasnt been and may not be his nature to leap. Dallas will have to figure that out either w/ him or Murray or Choice.

I agree with everything in the OP.

I'd also like to add that although the oline is trending up, they are partially responsible for our abysmal run blocking, especially on the goal line.

....pretty darn obvious we NEED a lead fullback. This Fiammetta kid can't stay healthy and Josh Brent was a desperatrion move: and on 4th down? Gimme a break...I've ALWAYS believed running is essential to winning. NOT solely, but when you have a QB with deficiencies: like we do right now, you gotta help him out. Easier said than done obviously though. :bang2:

nice write up.

I have to say i am not that depressed. What i watched was a Dallas team that dominated the Lions for about 2 1/2 quaters. The Lions are considers a top 4 team and they basically had no chance against us. And whats more the Lions didn't beat us. If not for Romo going braindead again there would have been not turnaround.

Think about this: We are still unexperienced in our defense scheme, our oLine is young and we are missing critical starters in our lineup. Still we already dominate top teams. It was the same with the Jets.

I feel really good about this team. And with our new defenese we are really fun to watch.

I was considering attemtping to respond to this thread but when you so eloquently stole every answer I was going to give, all I can do instead is say kudos!

You're seriously in my head today!

I mentioned this same thing in another post.

I think this team is 2-0 when Fiammetta plays and 0-2 without him.
