Three Year Rule
1. First year rookies are learning their positions at a pro level.
2. Second year players are supposed to add pro strength to their knowledge.
3. Third year players are supposed to use the combination of further strength and knowledge to translate with results.

If they can't do it in 2-3 years, they usually don't (apparently).

Deon Anderson project might be really good.

They saw something in ball that they didn't see in oglsbey

Garrett saw something in berger in miami, but if he doesn't produce soon, he isn't going to stick. I think we'll draft some offensive linemen in the 09 draft, and i see him going beddy bye.

Stephen Bowen is probably gonna get a lot more playing time this year. But its really time for him to show what he can do. I doubt he can really beat anyone out to start.

Kevin Burnett has already shown quite a bit (They wanted to make him the starter last year, but his health is a problem).

Courtney Brown is really starting to show some stuff. Might eventually make Roy expandable, wouldn't count on it though. Still having him and Henry helps in that regard.

I expect a lot out of carpenter, dude just needs to learn the position and start playing more aggresively. He has the physical attributes, he really needs the confidence. And they're still moving him around. Linebacker is one of the hardest positions to play in the nfl. And they've moved him to every position in the lb corps. Its tough in dallas. Even Spencer is still a backup, and they were saying he was looking as good as ware before he got hurt.

Tony Curtis clearly isn't a long term answer when the team is still drafting tight ends in the 2nd round almost every year... He has to make use of time with Bennett being the 3rd receiver.

Doug Free has this year to prove he can start before they resign columbo. He probably wishes he could have two years under huock, but he doesn't. I see him being good depth, but nothing more than that.

It didnt turn on for Andre Gurode until he moved back to center, and even then it was a process. Drafted in 2002, turned on in 2006. Could have EASILY dropped what turned out to be a pro bowl player. Good thing he pushed Al Johnson in 2005.

Jason Hatcher showed a lot last year before getting hurt, but he dissapeared this off season. Hopefully he makes a statement for more playing time. Him and Bowen seem like better pass rushers than Canty and Spears. I almost forget he was a 3rd round draft pick. We reached on him big time. He only played two years of defensive end in college though, and he was hurt last year.

The defensive line is definitely interesting/underrated. What it looks like we have right now is

Canty - Johnson - Ratliff
Bowen - Spears - Hatcher

And all these guys should be players we can count on. Spears finally seems to be doing some serious things now. Ratliff really turned in on in year 3. I see our defensive line becoming pretty dominant either this year or the next. Our new coaches on the defensive line seem to be getting through to some players. Johnson is in his 1st full year with us, and seems to be confident.

Sam Hurd and Miles Austin are really misfortunate to have been hurt so early on. They're both really playing for thier careers in dallas this year. WR will be revamped next year much like cornerback was this year. I expect a veteran, and a rookie drafted pretty high. So thats the top 4 receiver spots right there, unless something changes. Miles Austin seems like his special teams play, and physical attributes (which seem like they are seperating him from hurd) will let him stay on the roster. We still kept Jefferson and Amendola, and I'm still holding out that Amendola will be able to get a lot stronger with a year in the league.

Can you believe pacman is only in his 3rd year? lets cut him some slack shall we? Newman has been in for 6 years. And Pacman is in a new scheme, and has been out of football. He stays out of trouble, and we're going to have the best secondary in yes ill say it the history of the nfl. If we still have all our players 2 years from now, its gonna suck for qbs. Pat Watkins has to show something NOW.

Kyle Kosier is a journeyman, and he is gonna get exposed through his injury. Its time for someone to step up and replace him. Pat McQuistan sucks though. This is his last year in Dallas. James Marten doesn't have too much longer either. Im stunned that Proctor beat Berger for the starting job, but i guess Berger just doesnt have the experience. We gotta start doing better with our backup linemen. I know its hard to evaluate, but this is ridiculous.

We're lucky our offensive line is pretty young, otherwise we'd be in a lot of trouble, like we are at receiver (depth).

quick question though. Why did we keep alonzo coleman over keon lattimore? And is Ogelsby eligble for the PS? Do we really need Julius Crosslin?

I think they keep changing barbie position because he sucks. But only time will tell u what everyone knows including the gut who drafted him. Although I did like him as the 5th lb when the boys went to a 3-5 in the preseason.if barbie is that good he should ask to be traded to a team that won't move him around. Amendola has no shot and its not his fault like u said the wr will be revampd and he doesn't look like an x or a z so unless he can play the y better than crayton he has no shot. Besides how many undrafted players ever become full time starters in dallas jus another sign of poor coachin or poor scouting. Oh and keepin a fb on the ps behind a 2cd yr fb goes in line with keepin 11 ol and droppin ogelsby after he made ur 53 by havin a great camp. Basicly the cowboys camp was all show little substance and means little about building a team and gettin ready for the season

i dont want to keep making the comparison especially because i dont think he is that good, but it took wes welker a while to find a scheme that he could excel in. I'd like to give amendola the same amount of time. He is gonna be a smarter and stronger player next year than he was this year. You had to think he was going to have a tough time, even Mike Jefferson had an advantage over him. No other straight rookie receiver made a larger impression this camp than amendola. His talent demanded a spot on the practice squad.

I think their was some substance to it, simply its a stretch for some people to make the team when there was as much depth as we have at some positions.

QB - I dissapointed we couldn't improve over brad johnson, but hopefully we'll get someone this year or next year, who can be that guy next year.

HB - really you knew no one was making this squad other than the obvious choices (no pun intended)

FB - After we released hoyte, we really put all our eggs in the deon anderson basket.

TE - Once again it was pretty obvious, Hannah being on the PS was obvious too.

Offensive line. Kyle Kosier's injury proves how much the front office has neglected/made poor decisions on getting offensive linemen. Hopefully the OL from Denver can prove to be good depth, maybe even a starter at some point. But Kyle Kosier isn't great, and we should have been looking to upgrade him this entire time. I don't have faith in any of our 2nd team offensive linemen.

Defensive Line - Seems actually pretty deep, I think this unit will surprise us. We didn't add anyone, but just moving some people around, tank johnson being here a whole year, spears breaking out, and just being healthy overall gives this unit a pretty good outlook. This could be a breakout year for a lot of players on the line.

Linebackers... we picked up Zach Thomas, and Bobby Carpenter could breakout, Kevin Burnett is already starting to do the job we thought he would. Anthony Spencer apparently looked like another Demarcus Ware in training camp.

Secondary - Adam Jones, Mike Jenkins, Orlando Scandrick (w/dave campo) v Jaques Reeves, and Nate Jones... i wonder...

Special Teams - return of Keith Davis, and contributions from Joneses Felix and Adam...

very very good post.....it has been very eye opening for a lot of us who think our back-ups would allow us to plug and play at will. I don't find ANY of these back-up OL ready for primetime. Maybe it is going to take not re-signing Columbo for us to get them ready for prime time. But the way I see it, we have the new guy Holland (because he has started for a quality organization) and we have one of Marten/McQuistan/Berger.....Free and Procter are terrible to me. Procter substituted for Gurode last year and was terrible....Free has the strength of a college player.....we HAVE to draft an OL on day one next year. And Canty is really going to have to show this year....I have a strong suspicion he wants more than we paid Ratliff....and if he is no better than he was last year, he will get the same offer Ratliff got. If he does not take it, I think we offer Spears the same deal and let Hatcher fight for playing time. We cannot keep guys around forever when the guys playing in front of them don't show up. I really hate that we got to this point with Burnett....but Parcells wanted bigger LBers....Wade took one look at Akin Ayodele and realized the guy could not play for us...I expect Burnett to be exteneded if he stays healthy and makes play. We do not have any other LBers like him on the team. And Wade likes fast LBers....and Burnett is fast and physical. I am pretty sure this is the last year Carpenter is in Dallas....a ILB will be drafted on the first day next year. Stanback is going to have to stay healthy and make plays this year....if he doesn't...that is it for him too. Why are we trying to teach someone to be a WR, when you have a guy like Chad Jackson walking the streets. Let's be honest...we spend time trying to tell Stanback how to line up....we spend time trying to tell Lowbler that you cannot stiff arm someone ACROSS your body...I mean are you kidding me....we are teaching guys how to be WRs, but yet we don't want to look into Chad Jackson? Again, a WR will be drafted on the 1st day next year

I think they kept Crosslin on the practice squad for the same reason they kept a quarterback and two receivers.

All are positions where they went 'light' on the 53-man roster so they have a guy stashed on the practice squad in case of injury.

And I also think Crosslin showed something in the preseason.

Well I started reading this thread (And by the way the original post was very good, although I don't necassarily agree with it 100%) but from what I've seen in some other posts here, and on these forums for a while now, is that some of the fans here seem to think that you're going to have high quality starters, or potential pro bowlers, backing up at every position. Or at least it seems like a lot of the fans THINK we should have that at every position, or the coaching staff/scouts suck because we 'Don't have 10 offensive lineman who could go to the probowl if they were starting.'

Jebus people. They're back ups. They're back ups for a reason. You're not going to have a boat load of fantastically talented, super awesome, guys you wouldn't worry, at all, about if they came in to play for an injured starter, backups all across the board.

It just doesn't work that way. You don't think every single other team in the NFL would LOVE to have even more quality backups?

If the coaching staff in Dallas is doing such a horrible job of getting backups, and not making the worry in your mind subside by having an allstar team back up the all star team who starts, let me ask you these questions...

Quarterback Back Up: Everyone seems to really hate that Johnson is the back up here and are all doom and gloom if he had to play (Obviously if Romo went down your Superbowl chances all but go with him, I agree) but ask yourself this...If Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Big Ben, Carson Palmer, David Garrad, Phillip Rivers, Eli Manning go down...whose the big bad saving grace whose coming off their benches?

WR: I agree our depth is slim, because of the injuries to Austin and Hurd, but in a couple weeks when they're back I like our depth, personally. Apparently, however, our team sucks because they didn't go out and make sure they found the guy that if TO goes down you don't worry all that much cause you've got Player X who will step right in and do the job. Well, ok, ask yourself this. If Randy Moss goes down whose filling his shoes in New England? If Plaxico Burress goes out whose coming in and lighting a secondary up the same way he does for New York? When Andre Johnson goes down whose picking up the slack in Houston?

I know it's the 'in thing' to look around the league now and see teams like Cincy with two #1 WRs starting, and the Colts who had two #1 WR's starting (Though Harrison may not be as good as he once was now) and Cards with two #1's, and the Patriots who had all those WR's last year...but ask yourself something. Out of all those teams, who spend all that money having two #1 WR's playing in the starting line up, how many of them have actually won a Superbowl that way?

One. Just the Colts. Even the Patriots, with the greatest offensive show to grace Earth, the annointed greatest team of all time, couldn't win a Superbowl. The Cards and the Bengals, yeah, hows having 2 #1 targets working out for them? They don't even make the playoffs each year.

Now you could say "Well Dallas is a better team all around then them" and you'd be right. But if you were spending 9-10 million a year, or more, on two WR's, just so you can feel all warm and fuzzy about everything if TO goes down, then you took money away from other areas that make us a better team than those others.

Too much money in one area results in great play in that area and piss poor play in others, cause you're taking bargin basement chumps to fill out those spots.

And this can go on, and on, and on. You can look right around and ask yourself the same questions about the offensive line depth of pretty much every single team in the league, if not every one of them.

That's life in the NFL. Sure everyone would LOVE to have some backups who could actually be starters anywhere else in the league, so that they feel all comfy and cozy if their starters go down, but that's just simply not reality.

Galian, good post, exactly by what landry meant by the 3 year rule, here are some examples, due to fact, sometimes a player may come in to camp and have to change positions, or he isnt strong enough, or knowledgeable enough;

so that can take up to 3 years to bulld that player up;

This is the reason for the 3 year rule by tom landry;
First a player has to show a glimpse of something the first year, just a glimpse mind you, but show something.

Second, here are examples;
George Andrie 1962 6th round pick;
Rayfield Wright 1967 7th round pick
Pat Riley 1967 11th round pick do you know who he is?
D D Lewis 6th rond pick, took him 3 years to develop like Ray Wright
Larry Cole, 68 16th round pick,
Charley Waters 1970 3rd round pick, eventually moved to safety but CB first
John Fitzgerald & Pat Toomay 70 took, took them about 3 years to develop
Jean Fugett 72 draft pick slowly developed into decent player
Guy Brown,Andy Frederick & Jim Cooper steady players 1977 draft took time
Ken Norton Jr. yep it took Norton 3 years to develop, people were calling for his head in 88, 89, took time to develop

and thats just a few of the players that took 3 years to develop

Main reason why Tom Landry came up with the 3 year rule, is way back in early 1960's, I cant think of his name, but he was a DE that the Cowboys signed as a free agent, and Landry let him go the first year or 2nd year, that defensive end eventually became all pro, maybe Hostile can come up with his name.

as most of you might know but if you dont, Rayfield Wright was first drafted as a TE, he was eventually moved to OT, took a couple years to develop him when he mmoved to OT, adding weight etc.

Charley Waters was a QB, drafted as such, he was forced to play CB awhile, then landry moved him to safety and the rest is history;

there have been such numerous stories where head coaches took players and put them at another position, that in itself took awhile, one of them was Mark Tuneii, whom was a defensive linemen, who later played on superbowls for the cowboys in the early 90's. Another example of defensive linemen that were changed to offenisve linemen was Pat Donovan whom was a defensive end at Stanford I believe, it took time for him to develop at OT, but he became all pro due to what landry saw in him, and time to develop

thats the reason for the 3 year rule,

The '3 year rule' makes even more sense now because it is much more fiscally responsible for teams to fill out their rosters with mid-round picks and UDRFAs on rookie contracts than it is to sign mid-level veteran free agents. With the younger players you lose consistency but gain potential, and isn't that what we see in the league now, less consistency, but more occassions of late round picks (like Brady) and UDRFAs (Romo) making rosters and succeeding when there is a good chance they never would have had that opportunity 20 years ago.

yep now your getting the ideal,

you cant have top first round picks on your roster all the time due to the expense of their contracts and the salary cap

so hince lower round and undrafted players must fill your roster, just like bill bates played for the cowboys 10 plus years, you have to have players that know their roles, they may not be superstars but they can help the team

and like romo he was undrafted and played on the team for 3 plus years before he took over, thats the 3 year rule, you have to develop players

What i do find intersting is how everyone came out with pitch forks and torches looking for Spears, claming that Hatcher and Bowen were better players. Now this season and training camp, i haven't heard of Hatcher or Bowens name yet.

I wonder why that is...

Hatcher has really disapointed me- I really thought he was primed to make a move but he has done NOTHING.
