I would like to go back and grade our draft... realistically. We cannot rate this one yet.

We can go back 3 years or so and see what happened and what they grade really was...

1 11 DeMarcus Ware OLB Troy State
1 20 Marcus Spears DE Louisiana State
2 42 Kevin Burnett LB Tennessee
4 109 Marion Barber RB Minnesota
4 132 Chris Canty DE Virginia
6 208 Justin Beriault DB Ball State
6 209 Rob Petitti T Pittsburgh
7 224 Jay Ratliff DE Auburn

I dont remember what I graded this draft... I know I was high on Ware but that was it... to me... this draft was C at best.... I was just happy to get what we thought we had gotten in a "playmaker" in Ware.

Barber = Gem

Grade C

You cannot be serious....a 'C'...when you have that many guys start that many games on a a team that made the playoffs....their is no way it should receive a grade that low

Wait, a draft that delivers 2 pro-bowlers

5 starters, 6 major contributers, gets a C?

Because we missed on two 6th round choices, seriously?

the points being:

1. You can't evaluate a draft until the players have had time to develop
2. any attempt to do so is mere speculation

5 quality starters (2 of whom are complete studs) from one draft? That's an A in my book.

And to add to that

out of the 8 players drafted

6 still remain on our team with significant roles in the team.

Out of the two that didn't make, one started for a year, and the other retired due to injury.

Ware and Barber's presence alone should give it a B. Let alone when you throw in Ratliff, who came in and dominated the middle, and Canty who's been a force on the end. Let's not forget about Burnett who has solidified himself as our nickel LB.

You people really get me

Why are you going back 3 years to one of the best drafts we've had in some time? Why no 2 years to one of the worst or 4 to another sub par one?

At the time, there's no way you gave that draft a C, two first rounders, both of whom were viewed as studs. Burnett and Canty were projected to be good players, Canty being a 1st round talent till he got hurt, Barber was very good in college.

You may be revising history just a bit to make your point.

Because he's applying the 3 year rule?

You know that thing he starts saying?

Sometimes reading is fundamental

I got ya... just throwin it up for debate.
I was really looking for input on who we passed up that would have raised our grade.

Yup.

You're right, reading is fundamental. You might try it sometime.

He says, "We can go back 3 years or so"

Sheesh, YoMick

If you were a professor you would have flunked Thomas Edison in applied sciences, Thomas Jefferson in civics and Albert Einstein in mathematics.

Please don't bring back bad memories....
Wish I could have selective Alzymer..... :laugh2:

Excellent point. I would like to go back 3 or 4 or 4 years as well... perhaps another thread, another time.

Keep in mind that my grade is based on a little more than "casual" knoweldge of the college players and the draft.

The three year rule was a Tom Landry thing. He felt that drafts couldn't be evaluated until a player had three years in the league. I happen to agree with that logic as well...

I give that draft a solid "A" though...

Rob Pettiti makes me give this draft class a Big fat F!:)

J/k

Ware alone makes this a good draft class and barber was a GEM. not to mention we got a starter in Canty and the Rat is now also starting.

I give it a grade A-

Wow...

Instead of wrecking the OP(thread) how about going with the "theme"

Grading of the draft then and now. Thats what I am looking for "details" and the insight of the more knowledgable posters on the board.

It is becoming more and more common that "Wrecking" a thread is a theme. Losing sight of what his place is IMO.

Its a good thread. Run with it.

If not... as you were. :)

I agree with the three year rule, just not the idea of using it when it's convenient to prove that a draft viewed one way at the time could turn out to be spectacular. Especially when the draft that the 3 year rule happens to fall on was one of the best in ages.

You obviously can't judge a draft on draft day with any remote kind of certainty.

And I apologize if I'm ruining your thread by bringing this up, YoMick, it just seemed to me like it was brought up to judge the people that were already judging the draft.

I think an interesting question would be what people thought of the 2006 draft as well, and how that one is turning out. If we're going to discuss the good, we can discuss the bad as well.

No problem.
No that was not my intention. My intentions are pretty clear in OP if you read the post.... and not try and read into it.

Agreed. Agreed.

Possibly the best defensive player in the NFL, a Pro Bowl running back and three starters on the defensive line?

I'll gladly take that kind of draft every season.
