NFC East Battle or Cowboys Warm Up

Sometimes it’s ok to take the easy way out and it seems the NFC East just became a whole lot easier for our Dallas Cowboys. At least we hope it has. On Tuesday the Eagles will be trading running back stud LeSean McCoy to the Buffalo Bills for Linebacker Kiko Alonso, a former Duck who played for Eagles Head Coach Chip Kelly at Oregon. The Eagles also already released starting outside linebacker Trent Cole as well as starting cornerback Cary Williams. In trading McCoy away, the Eagles are saying goodbye to an elite running back who placed 3rd in the NFL in rushing yards last season with 1,319 yards. McCoy was constant trouble for our Cowboys defense in these last 5 years, so to see him gone and out of the division brings a small sigh of relief to fans and myself. His last game as an Eagles player in Dallas will be the Thanksgiving game where he ran for 159 yards as they dominated the Cowboys. Good riddance Mr. McCoy as you single-handedly ruined my 2nd Annual Cowboys Thanksgiving game family trip.
But the Eagles aren’t the only NFC East team heading towards tough times. The Washington Commanders, who are coming off a lousy 4-12 season, still have many questions in the air regarding quarterback Robert Griffin III. Head Coach Jay Gruden will be returning for the 2015 season and we all know how displeased he is in RGIII’s play. No NFL team can succeed much without a strong leader and with the constant dilemma between head coach and quarterback in Washington; next season appears to be 2014 part 2. Unless we see the RGIII from his rookie year and before the knee injuries, the ‘skins look pretty bad once again.
To finish off the NFC East we take a look at the 2011 NFL Champions, the New York Giants. The G-Men show great promise with Rookie Sensation Odell Beckham Jr. and Jason Pierre-Paul holds the fort down on defense, but Eli Manning has been slowly declining in completion %, touchdowns and QB rating in each of the last 4 years. This may be deceiving as he’s never had a receiver on the other end of his pass like Beckham Jr. The Giants have been trying to return to 2011 form but have been sub .500 for the last 2 seasons to Cowboys fan’s delight, but again seem to be vastly improved. Inconsistency has been their problem as you never know which team will show up, but that mainly depended on which Eli was going to show up on Sunday. The NFC East title may very well be between the Giants and Cowboys in 2015 and of course my chips are on the Cowboys.
The Cowboys seem to be the only team in the NFC East with continuity and players talented enough for another 10 + win season. Dez Bryant and Cole Beasley are returning and as of writing this article, Justin Durant is in the process of being resigned as well. The dominating great wall is intact along with familiar faces, Tony Romo, Jason Witten and company. I know Demarco Murray is still up in the air, but my gut tells me he will be wearing a star on his helmet next season. And if not, there seem to be several viable options at running back this free agency period. The Cowboys are in line to be contenders for a few years to come, but especially next season with everyone else in the NFC east starting to look like pretenders early. The pieces are slowly starting to fall our way this off season and after a few disappointing last game of season losses; we deserve a few breaks in the division race. The 2015 off-season is starting to shape up like it’s ours to lose.
