This reminded me of when I met Mel Renfro at a game some years back. I had the opposite impression of Mel. I was amazed at how skinny he was. But he still looked fit as a fiddle. But even he remarked at how buff my brother in law and I were!

Mel was another one who oozed class though as did so many guys from that era.

Mel Renfro- another great person. Read his autobiography about when he first came to Dallas in 1964. He and guys like Cornell Green, Bob Hayes, and Don Perkins had an unbelievably difficult time getting housing in Dallas. They weren’t treated like heroes in those days. They exhibited so much grace and courage.

I know 32 years isn't exactly a milestone but this came across on my Facebook news feed today and wanted to share it. I can still feel the awe and respect in my heart for this man just looking at this picture.

On this day August 4, 1990 - Tom Landry was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.

Greatest coach that ever lived. He innovated offenses, defenses, and everything in-between. Other coaches may have more wins and championships but nobody ever taught more depth or volume of everything football than Tom Landry.
One of Landry's football acumens was scouting athletes that did not have a football background, having them in tryouts and training camps. A good number made his teams - and were contributors during the seasons.

I got to meet Coach Landry in 1989. He was at a book signing for his autobiography at a Barnes and Noble in Ft. Worth. He took time with each person in line, looked them in the eye, and asked their name before signing the book.

I remember being awed by how big he was. He was in a short sleeved polo and looked like he could still bench press about 350 lbs. Not an ounce of fat on the guy. Just oozed class.
Class act!

Me too. Growing up in NC in the 70's we didn't have a football team. The Deadskins were the closest thing and I hated them. Tom and Roger just had class about them. I was just in awe of them. Been a fan ever since. How I long for the days when our organization was the class of the league.
Sounds like my story as well
Raised in Jax Florida in the 1970s
No team in the area, but loved Roger and Coach Landry.
They are the reason I am a boys fan today.

Imagine having Vince Lombardi as your offensive coordinator and Tom Landry as you defensive coordinator.

Vince Lombardi wearing the Yankees “NY” and Tom Landry wearing the Baseball Giants “NY” in 1958.
Jim Lee Howell was the head coach.

I think Coach Landry would be the first to say his Faith was the center of his life.

This shot right here, my late grandmother who didn’t care for sports and didn’t know one player or coach in any sport but she sure knew him and the hat. And knowing he was a, God fearing person like herself, she knew him and even watched him speak at the legendary Billy Graham Crusade one year. She loved that about him and that won her over.

Tom was fired unceremoniously before I was even born, but I've still read almost every word ever written about him and he was the best of the best.

Last October, I was in Dallas for a game and visited his gravesite. Right by his recently deceased wife's headstone, there was a small American flag just laying unattended. I proudly stuck it back in the ground where it was. It was such a simple, mundane action but I will always remember it.

I still often wonder to myself what he'd think of today's Cowboys, since the only living member of that FO back then is now a close personal friend of Jerry's.

His faith in God, a major reason I respect the man and became a Cowboy fan.
