All preseason long I watch as receivers on 3rd and long are targeted running routes 2 or 3 yards shy of the 1st down, resulting in a punt of course. This also happens often in the regular season. What the heck, is this route in the playbook.

The huddle - "Ok guys, it is 3rd and 7. Everyone run 5 yards and turn around."

Those plays make me drink heavily.

i think a lot of that is what the defense is doing. they probably r parking themselves at the 1st down mark so difficult to get open there. that is when having a huge big tight end helps.

How about the hb screens when it’s 3rd and 10? Isn’t preseason the time of year to see what your backups can do? Mainly the qb?

Lol. Exactly, gotta keep that “qb rating” up
YES. We know people like Skip Bayless love that statistic.

I liked last night that Cooper Rush went down the field immediately and drew that PI call. It was a good play that should have came to fruition (but set up the field goal), but I hardly saw the same call for the rest of the game.

Haha exactly!

Yep, that’s the challenge every team is going to give us until we prove we can, and/or WILL do it. Unfortunately, they aren’t just sitting back and letting zeke run them over and dak dump it off like that rookie year anymore.

Yes - I keep hearing the phrase "stack the box" on Zeke from virtually every football analyst.

If Zeke is so containable, then how come only one team (Denver, Week 2, 2017) has been able to do it? This guy isn't Cadillac Williams or Matt Forte. This dude is a generational talent and the world is going to find out here in a few weeks.

I wouldn’t describe the broncos game as containing zeke. I would say our qb sucks so bad that the only way we could pass it was to line up with 5wr’s on the first play of the game, and then motion zeke to the backfield (which we did) and then get our heads beat in (which we did).

While we should have come out with one wr and qb under center and pointed to the hole we were going to run at and done it till they stopped it. That is how the team was built and all

I would have fired linehan after the first play call of that broncos game. But they can’t cause Garrett/Linehan are married to the leagues leading jersey seller #4.

I don't think we threw another 20 yd pass after the Dak to Gallup TD in the first game

Dak was the leading rusher that game and also took 50 attempts. We couldn't establish any control at the LOS. Zeke was stifled early, and running the football wasn't re-visited throughout the rest of the game.

I'd say it was more of a result of poor planning and poor coaching than anything.

It's almost as if the defense is willing to give that to the offense on 3rd and long, or something.

It's not just the Cowboys, and no, the play isn't designed to be short. The alternative is forcing a pass into an area that is not open, with a good chance of an interception.

What's the solution? Don't get in 3rd and long.

He didn’t try later in the game cause we were getting killed. Not arguing with ya bro......but I’m just saying if the cowboys think they are going to spread the ball out and be this efficient short passing team and a power run team at the same time this year......and win a lot of games!!! Then they are smoking crack.

You can’t come out in the spread cause there is nowhere to turn when you fall behind. It’s cute in college, but they got different rules in college.
