Week 1 : 2-11-18.2%

Week 2 : 3-10-30%

Total : 5-21-23.8%

Second worst percent in the NFL only ahead of Arizona.

I would appreciate if someone who is better at research could find out our average yards to go on 3rd down because I know that plays a big role.

This is our biggest concern on offense I believe. Even in the past when we haven't had much of a passing attack, we had 3rd and shorts often enough to keep the chains moving to wear down an opposing defense and give our defense more of a rest.

Well they improved from week one to week 2.
Let's see what they do in week 3.

All hail the offensive guru Scott Linehan! Hang your hat on that 31st ranked 3rd down offense.

it is just a number to improve upon. :)

Do you really believe we will stay #31 all season or there about that ranking.
I don't.

I don't, but I also didn't think we would be 31st after 2 weeks either.

Go figure #1 through 3 is
Indy, Tampa and then Jacksonville.

Welcome to the Dak Prescott era.

some of it has to do with Witten your checkdown is no longer there

3rd and long was a big problem last season. Definitely something to keep an eye on.

Carolina = 9 we did not make we had the following yardage to get on 3rd downs = 26, 12, 10, 11, 7, 3, 11, 23, 7
Carolina = 2 we did make 1st downs had the following yardage to get on 3rd downs = 11, 7

So against Carolina, we had 7 times where we had more than 10 yards to get on 3rd down.

NY Giants = 7 we did not make we had the following yardage to get on 3rd downs = 7, 10, 7, 10, 6, 20, 4 (went for it on 4th and converted)
NY Giants = 3 we did make 1st downs had the following yardage to get on 3rd downs = 2, 4, 2 (TD)

So against NY Giants, we had 3 times where we had more than 10 yards to get on 3rd down.

Average yards to go on 3rd downs not converted for both games was almost 11 yards.

Hard to convert for most teams.
Wonder what the top ranked teams averages are. I bet a lot less and easier to make.

So the Cowboys have had 21 third downs, and needed more than 10 yards on ten of them? No wonder the conversion rate is so low.

The problem isn't 3rd down - it's first and second down. No one makes a living converting third and 10 on a regular basis.

Pretty simple really. The running game has been ineffective and its getting us into 2nd and long and 3rd and long situations.

First down is the most important down for a successful drive. Against Carolina, we averaged 2.3 yards on first down. We also had 3 penalties on first down plays against Car which puts you behind the chains and making it twice as difficult to make a first down.It was a little better against the midgets but it’s still too early in the season to see if this trend is an ongoing problem.

I can guarantee you that the teams with better 3rd down conversion rates have a lot of good first down plays. And few penalties.

Part of it is we're too predictable on 1st down. Plus our rushing attack isn't picking up chunk yardage on 1st down like it did in 2016. It's easy to point the finger at Dak but it's a myriad of issues.

Appreciate this!
