1) T/G Rodger Saffold, 6-5 316, Indiana - Saffold has more experience at LT, than Bruce Campbell and Charles Brown combined. He has started 41 games there, is a team captain and about as safe a pick there is at #27. Not a sexy pick mind you, but Saffold could start right away at LG, if that's what Jerry and Wade wanted. He's got enough size, strength and agility to play LT in the NFL, but I doubt he'd start there as a rookie. However, he could replace Kosier and that might be the plan for this draft. In other words, Iupati could be first on our board and then Saffold is next in line.
2) WR Carlton Mitchell, 6-3 215, South Florida - Mitchell just intrigues the hell out me. He's got all the physical attributes you look for and is just loaded with potential. His 15.7 average is what really sticks out, because only Thomas (19.5), Tate (17.2), Tindal (16.8) and Bryant (16.5) have a higher average with 100 catches. So, it's not surprising he ran a 4.46 (Austin ran a 4.47) at the combine and a 4.46 at his Pro Day as well. He's got very good speed and hops too with a 36 VJ. Mitchell would be an excellent compliment to Austin, but he won't be there at the bottom of the 3rd round Jerry...you're gonna have to snag him at #59.
3) DE Clifton Geathers, 6-8 299, South Carolina - Whether I like it or not, Geathers just can't keep still. He's still climbing up the boards and by the time the Cowboys pick in the 3rd, his name will be screaming from our board to draft him. Parcells and Belichick will be licking their chops, if we pass on Geathers here. Don't wait to draft this potential goldmine Jerry...time is the killer!
4) CB Ben Burney, 5-11 202, Colorado - blazing up the boards is 5th year senior Burney, who posted a 4.38 forty, 4.15 shuttle, 6.71 cone and a 39 VJ at his Pro Day. What stands out the most for me is his excellent size at 202lbs. He won't get pushed around by WR's and he still has a lot of upside IMO. He had surgery on his shoulders in 2008, but came back strong with 73 tackles last year and 16 reps at his Pro Day. He's played mostly RCB, but has started 2 games at FS. His dad (Jacob) has been the defensive line coach for the Broncos since 2002. I'd rather take him in the 5th like Scandrick, but he'll still be the best CB left IMO.
6) FS/SS Jeromy Miles, 6-2 210, Massachusetts - I moved up Miles from my last mock, since NFLDS now ranks him as the 9th SS in the draft...go figure. Miles is a good sized safety prospect with plenty of experience and was a team captain along with Vladimir Ducasse. Transfered from the Navy as a sophomore in 2007. Has started 47 straight games with 294 tackles, 10.5 TFL, 7 FF, 5 FR, 9 INT's, 1 TD and 23 PD. Was not invited to the combine, but ran a 4.45 and 4.46 at his Pro Day with a 35 1/2 VJ and 13 reps. Miles is durable, has good speed for his size, is a ballhawk type and just makes plays. Miles could play SS, but with his vast experience at FS he probably fits there best IMO.
7) FS/SS/WR Quentin Scott, 6-4 224, Northern Iowa - Scott is a prospect shooting up from the depths of obscurity, thanks to an awesome performance at his Pro Day. Scott had a 4.39 and 4.47 forty, 4.18 shuttle, 6.88 cone, 35 1/2 VJ and 10'01" BJ. He did 13 reps, but his arms measured in at 34 5/8...so you gotta cut him a little slack. He was a JUCO transfer and played in just 24 games with 11 starts at FS...all last year. He recorded 69 tackles, 4 TFL, 1 FR, 6 INT's for 131 yards and 1 TD, 9 PD and 1 blocked punt. Participated in the Texas vs Nation Game and was nicknamed "Taylor Mays" by some of his teammates. I'll take a Taylor Mays clone in the 7th round thank you very much. Worst case scenario, he'll become another special teams demon and backup SS like Watkins. Best case scenario, he'll play on both sides of the ball and on special teams too. NFLDS currently ranks Scott as the 9th best FS....go figure.
