3rd time in 10 years that a home loss to WAS could keep DAL out of the playoffs

Disclaimer: I know perfectly well that the 2005 Cowboys, 2012 Cowboys, and 2014 Cowboys had other losses to blame that could have kept them out of the playoffs, too.

In 2005, the Cowboys were leading the Commanders 13-0 at home on Monday night but Washington then shockingly came back to stun Dallas, 14-13. The Cowboys eventually finished 9-7 that year and missed the playoffs. All other things being equal, if they had beaten Washington, they would have been 10-6 and the Commanders would have been the team missing out at 9-7.

Side note: There were two huge, easily-preventable defensive lapses that cost the Cowboys dearly. First, Dallas allowed Mark Brunell to scramble for 23 yards on third-and-26; the Skins then converted the short fourth-and-3. Later on, Dallas allowed Washington to convert a 4th-and-15 late in the fourth quarter. Also, because of this defeat, the Commanders won their only playoff win of the last fourteen years. If they had lost to Dallas, they'd now have a playoff drought exceeding Dallas' from 1996-2009.

In 2012, the Cowboys, playing at home on Thanksgiving, allowed the RG3-led Commanders to jump out to a dominating 28-6 lead. The Cowboys fought back valiantly in the second half but couldn't overcome the deficit, falling 38-31 to Washington. The Cowboys were later on defeated in the season finale again by Washington and thus missed the playoffs. All other things being equal, if they had beaten Washington at home on Thanksgiving, they would have been tied 9-7 with the Commanders but awarded the NFC East division title due to the common-opponent tiebreaker.

In 2014, the heavily favored Cowboys were hosting the Commanders but shockingly lost, 20-17. Unlike 2005 and 2012, this loss is unlikely to mean that the Commanders will overtake the Cowboys in the standings; Washington is simply too bad this year. But the loss to the Commanders was immensely damaging in two ways; first of all, it was a loss, and a loss to an NFC East foe; second of all, Romo was injured, which led to Weeden starting against Arizona, and Weeden's horrible performance lost the game for Dallas. So this Washington loss really caused two losses instead of just one.

Instead of potentially being 8-2 or 9-1 entering the bye week and being a legitimate contender for the conference's top seed, the Cowboys are now fighting for their playoff lives to even get a wild-card berth, especially since the Cards and Niners both hold the tiebreaker over Dallas.

If the Cowboys miss the playoffs this year, the Washington defeat WILL almost certainly be our main cause of regret.

What kind of mentality thinks a 7-3 team going into it's bye week is struggling to make the playoffs? Things could very well go south for the Cowboys but the OP seems to wish that to be a self fulfilling prophecy. We've seen no sign that the Cowboys are headed for a nose dive after their break. Sure the week 6 loss to the Commanders should not have happen, but you can not cherry pick that first half of the season loss for a collapse in the second half.

Of course I'm not wishing for it to be a self fulfilling prophecy. What I'm saying is, if Dallas does miss out on the postseason this year, it would be most logical to look to the 20-17 loss to the Skins and say, "That's the point where things started to go awry."

That depends on the nature of the Boys collapse. If it happens because of Romo's injury that he received during that loss to the Skins, then I agree.

I personally prefer not to even think about a collapse at this point. It's all good vibes from me. Go Cowboys!

I think losing to the Skins is a product of being in the same division. Washington wasn't particularly good any of those seasons and neither were the Cowboys. I think this team is different and that game was one of a few glitches along the way. We'll see how it plays out.

As much as we have missed the playoffs in the last 20 years I think you could link the sun coming up as the reason why. I don't think a home loss to Washington is the key factor.

go back farther and you'll see in years '92, '93, and '95 we lost to them as many times as we beat them.

Last two times they played the SlursTony came away with broken parts of his back. That game does make me nervous. You would just hope they have checked out by then.

You would hope... but Dallas is always Washington's super bowl. The players know how much it means to the fans and the owner. They can literally probably save their job by playing well against Dallas.

Washington always, always gets up to play Dallas.

do not agree.we are bad offensiviely against the skins because we cannot figure out the blitz, romo has always struggled when haslett took over.you dont think the eagles will blitz romo all day?.I hope Linehan is working on it right now because the eagles secondary is not that good but they blitz a lot to cover up.

I'm with the OP.

If we come up one game short at the end of the season, .. we will look back at the game that we lost AT HOME against the 2-5 team, with a 3rd string QB, and a 1st year HC and realize that we should NEVER have lost that game.

We won't look at games that we might have lost against good teams, .. that happens.

We overlooked the skins, never showed up, took them lightly, .. however you want to word it. But that is just a game that we should not have lost, .. skins or not.

It is hard to get into the "tournament" in the NFL, and sometimes it come down to one game. Let's hope it doesn't this season.

That's sports........my problem would be if we loose the 2nd go-round because Haslett again comes with the house on every 3rd down, and we have not prepared our receivers to break off the long routes to a hot route............the OLine will do what they do, but if they are coming with 7 and we block with 5 OLine and a RB, its then on a receiver to recognize and run a hot route to the vacated blitzer hole.
