Haven't done one in a while, wanted to take a different approach with a trade down. We're on the clock at 16 and Mike Evans has fallen into our lap as a bargaining chip, San Francisco with 13 picks in this draft wants to make a deal to add some firepower for their offense, but this time we are able to leverage them for pick 30 and pick 56.
30. Ryan Shazier | LB | Ohio State
We watch Jernigan and Hageman come off the board followed by Clinton Dix and Dee Ford but we don't panic and select the best defensive player available who fills a big need at WLB, allowing Carter to slide over to the Sam. Shazier brings speed, instincts and playmaking ability as we annoint him our version of Derrick Brooks.
47. Kareem Martin | DE | North Carolina
Big sigh of relief to see him fall into our laps, as we were getting antsy standing pat watching those last 5 picks. Martin helps ease some of that uncertainty we had going in about our edge pressure, and those physical tools Marinelli can't wait to get his hands on him.
56. Dominique Easley | DT | Florida
With the extra pick acquired from the trade down, our brass feels comfortable rolling the dice a little with Easley, who if not for a knee injured suffered this season was playing his way into the middle of Round 1. All of a sudden this front 7 is starting to come together. With the signing of Melton we don't need to rush him back before he's ready, but when he's cleared it'll instantly upgrade that nickel rush and gives us another versatile pawn to move around along the line. Brings an infectious swag to this unit.
78. Jarvis Landry | WR | LSU
Suprised we're taking another WR in round 3? Don't be. Especially one who fits like Landry. I think the FO knows we're in serious trouble if Dez has to miss time and we can't afford to gamble our season on Beasley or Harris being able to step up. They're nice depth players, but Landry provides a level of consistency from the slot, a position Tony has shown he can develop chemistry with quickly. I love Landry's leadership qualities, toughness, and propensity to come up with the clutch play. I know he's not a burner, but he's an excellent technician who may prove to be a steal at this point.
119. Storm Johnson | RB | Central Florida
We've been searching for a back to spell Murray, and with him entering a contract year as well as struggling to stay healthy, I expect us to be aggressive in finding that complement in this draft. Unlike the other mid-round backs, Johnson is a complete player. He can create in the run game, is a capable receiver out of the backfield, and can be trusted to block in the pass game. He also fits this stretch zone scheme to a T. This is a pick we'll learn to appreciate come November and December.
158. Craig Loston | S | LSU
I know we have a ton of safeties on this roster ready to compete for the job opposite Church, so why would I spend a 5th on Loston? Simply put, I believe his upside is higher than all of them. Decorated HS player who came into his own late at LSU, I think his best football is ahead of him. He'll take your head off and has enough range to be more than capable covering half the field in this defense. I want to create as much competition as I can at the safety position, and when he shows up to camp the rest of that group is going know it'll be a dogfight all summer.
TRADED TWO 7ths TO MOVE INTO THE 6th
6th. Larry Webster | DE | Bloomsburg
This is strictly taking flier on a physical freak who was productive at the lower level and hoping Marinelli can coach him up. From a measurables standpoint, this is Demarcus Ware. Definitely worth a look.
238. Kadeem Edwards | OG | Tennessee State
248. Donald Hawkins | OT | Texas
251. Marquis Flowers | LB | Arizona
254. Brandon Dixon | CB | Northwest Missouri State
