Would It be reasonable for Phillips to go to the hybrid 4-3 this week in order to have more big bodies in the holes to stop/slow down Peterson? This seems to make sense to me in such a Predominant run team. Your thoughts?

No, thanks.

The Cowboys have been very effective stopping the run.

The 3-4, originally adopted from the Oklahoma 5-2, was specifically designed as a run-stopping defense, by removing a slower DL and replacing him with a faster LB. Today, it's more known as a pass-rushing D because of the addition of the zone blitz, but is still very effective as a run D (assuming the players fit the scheme).

I think only 6 or 7 teams use the 3-4 base, yet 4 of those are currently in the top 8 in NFL run defense (Pit, NE, Dal, SD).

Our problem is not stopping the run, its defending the pass.

Not all the time because they run the 3/4, however, I think they do have some packages that use the 4/3 if needed. But, I would just stick to what they are doing because stopping the run is not a problem for the Cowboys.

That would be incredibly dumb.

1. The vikings haven't faced 3-4 defense all year so we have an advantage there.

2. Running a 4-3 would mean one less "Quick" guy on the field to run AP down.

3. Changing your whole defensive front because of ONE player is always dumb.

One more thing about the 3-4. It provides a stong "contain" and helps prevent the runner from getting to the edge. Against a runner like Peterson, that helps a lot.

I just hope that today we find out that our d-rank against the run is for real and not because we haven't face a "real" running back/attack yet.
