I just wanted to make a friendly public service announcement because I think many here have forgotten about it: P-A-R-I-T-Y.
I believe that 90's dynasty is the bar that everyone compares the current squad to. It's always "Is Julius the next Emmitt?" or "Will this finally be the QB who replaces Troy?" or "Is Keyshawn/TO the heart and sould we've missed since Irvin?" or "DeMarcus Ware is our best rusher off the edges since Charles Haley."
This team is disappointing. The offense can light it up at times, but not consistently. Julius and this offensive line are never going to be the ground threat we had hoped. Even more disappointing is the defense. Just a few guys in that front seven creating a pass rush and a bunch of scrubs inbetween. We still struggle at times around Newman and Roy with the defensive backs.
But then I have to remind myself that we don't have to play that mid-90's San Francisco 49ers juggernaught anymore, or the up and coming Brett Favre shootout Packers. Hell, the most we have to be scared of are the NYFG, who are probably just a slightly superior team talent-wise, and the Chicago Bears who suddenly look a lot less scary now that we have a decent quarterback who won't fall apart under their elite pass rush.
I'm not scared of the Saints. That's a miracle season but come on, we saw Fujita and Shanle in Dallas. That's their best starting crew? Atlanta is as inconsistent as us. Vick can be Kordell Stewart one night, and Randall Cunningham in his MVP year the next. Seattle is worried about its starting QB and RB. We beat Carolina soundly last week. Minnesota is strong on the lines, but not impossible. The Rams, Eagles, any given Sunday, it's a game we can win with the predictable rock not under center these days.
The Bears and Giants are the only teams in the NFC who are separating themselves from the pack. The wildcards are still:
Minnesota 4-3 (who is losing right now and might go 4-4)
Atlanta 5-3
Dallas 4-4
Philly 4-4
Carolina 4-4
St. Louis 4-4
The main thing we have to worry about is our cruddy NFC East record in case we end up with Philly in a tiebreaker scenario for the wildcard, assuming we don't catch the Giants which is always possible.
I'm not sure I like this league nowadays. I don't think I deserve to be as optimistic as I still am about this team. As inconsistent as this team has been, it's still just a small end of season hot streak away from going to the NFC Championship, and who knows from there.
