4 Defensive Coordinators who could Replace Mike Nolan

That minus Tomsula is basically my list.
Those are all SHORT term solutions.

Wade or Marvin my preference by a mile.
Marvin runs a straight up 4-3 and would be a little step back to prior years.

Wade runs a very simple attack the offense with each player in their perfect role scheme that works great until other teams figure out it's weaknesses.

With Wade I think we could win a Super Bowl provided we get some guys healthy and shore up this patch work OL.

I would be shocked if we fired the DC at this point
And I think the only remote possibility would be Marvin Lewis because of his relationship with MM

Tomsula hasn't been a DC since 2005, when he was coaching football in Germany.

I don't think he's imminently qualified to take over, since his DL has greatly underperformed.
Why Dallas would chose him at option #1 is mind boggling.

Is it too early to start looking for Nolan's replacement?
Option 1: Jim Tomsula
Option 2: George Edwards
Option 3: Marvin Lewis
Option 4: Wade Phillips

- Interim - George Edwards, who was previously Vikes DC, how much of his success belongs to Edwards, how much credits to Mike Zimmer ?
Since how he does, ..see how he operates..... see how he adjusts and simplifies for players and re-evaluate the DC role after the season.

Definite NO to Tomsula
- while he was HC with Niners, he ran his type of defense, and players griped like hell how he preferred his DC to operate it.

- only had a decent defense when mike zimmer was DC, otherwise its' been horrible for him as a HC. i prefer a guy that has
been in the works as a DC, vs a guy that hasnt been a DC in over a decade.

- wade phillips, he seems to know how to fix a poor defense fast, but something seems to eventually happen in the back secondary
with coverage that falls apart for him.
has been a top DC for two super bowl teams (denver, rams) ..but once again DLaw would have to be a stand up 3-4 OLB in his scheme,
but he is rare in his 3-4 scheme is a one gap system, he wants his DE and NT, shooting gaps and upfield, not stay still holding ground,
like most 3-4 schemes
.

In season? I doubt Marvin Lewis walks away from Arizona State this close to their season (finally) starting.

In the off-season? All 4 are horrible choices.

Look, if this defense continues setting records, we'll have no choice but to fire Nolan. The front office is all lovey-dovey at this stage in the transition, or at the very least extremely reluctant to pay a salary for someone who isn't coaching, but you cannot continue to put this dumpster fire on the field. Something will have to happen.

The only way to fix this mess is to get rid of Nolan. He turn a top mid level defense to the bottom of a barrel joke. Now ppl talk about rebuilding? Oh heck no! Rebuild this coaching staff by getting coaches that can actually coach!

This reminds me of special teams last year. The FO will waste this football season holding on to Nolan. At that point Nolan and MM needs to go.

Why not Dom Capers?

Capers was Big Mac's long, long time DC in GB.

After departing GB in 2017, Dom, like Big Mac, took a season off to "study" and then did wonders in helping to transform the Jags formerly formidable D into a crappy unit in 2019.

Dom is now a consultant up in Minnesota and it looks like the Vikes D, that has been consistently top flight under Mike Zimmer, is rounding into a typical Capers D and giving up 30+ points a game.

If Big Mac is forced to move on from one old crony in Nolan, what is to stop him from bringing back the architect of all those "great" Defenses Big Mac featured in Green Bay?

Nolan is not going anywhere, during the season or after. He will get next year as well. Built in excise of the odd off season will keep him here.
its not an excuse...its the reality we're all livin' in.
no off-season did us no favors.

I don't know about four but I have three that would be just as good or better.

Yikes, great point. Hopefully they learned their lesson from that horrible performance, but I guess I'm less hopeful now that I think about it
