"In 2010 I signed a five-year, $37 million contract extension with $23 million guaranteed. It was the biggest contract for a tight end in league history," Davis wrote. "Four years later, and I'm playing at a higher level than I was then, which brings me to why I'm holding out. It's all about getting paid what you deserve. It's not that complicated. I want the 49ers to win the Super Bowl, and I want to be on the field this summer working towards that goal, but I have to worry about my future first."

In a way he isn't being honest about it. He isn't playing better than he was when he signed that contract in September 2010. That contract extension came after the best season of his career. A season he really hasn't come close to replicating. During the 2009 season he had 78 catches, 965 yards and 13 TDs. Since then he has averaged 54 catches, 776 yards and 7.75 TDs per season. His high outputs were 67 catches in 2011, 914 yards in 2010 and 13 TDs in 2013. So when he says he is playing at a higher level now than then, it really isn't being honest.

His hold out, if that's what he does, is out of line, imo

I'd sit him. then, if he's not intending to honor his deal.
Who they have backing him up?

I guess I respect his honesty but if I'm Kaep and the locker room, I'm not liking that tone. Especially having years left on that contract. Vernon, your good, but your not Jimmy Graham or Gronk (when healthy). Those players don't disappear in games.

Should be a way that teams can say "Sure, hold out and we void your contract, you lose one year of eligibility and pay a fine(part of signing bonus)", not to mention that said team gains back that salary cap.

You sign a contract, you honor it with the best of your ability..............

And that's correct, at least for the majority of the players. Heck, I know he's salivating that his QB just got paid 120 million, now he wants some of that pie as well.

If a player holds out, that's fine. The reasoning behind holding out is transparent, but is it necessary to speak ill-conceived statements while holding out?

"I have to worry about my future first."

Did any of the monies, earned from the five-year, 37 million dollar contract with $23 million guaranteed, ALLEVIATE any of that financial anxiety during the past four years?
