49ers GM John Lynch comments on Dee Winters trade

Sorry - full test for those who can’t access the link

49ers GM John Lynch: "That’s tough because Dee’s a guy who’s done a lot for us here. Sixth-round pick out of TCU. But Dee is one of the favorite guys in that locker room amongst his teammates. He’s done a lot for us on the field.

"We just felt like we were in a good position at linebacker, and Dallas has been really interested in him for a long time. And I’d say the talks probably started with myself and Stephen Jones, when we were talking about Osa (Odighizuwa). They’ve stayed on that. We kind of held it off for a while, and as we got there (Friday), we just felt like it was the right thing to do for our team.

"It’s a good opportunity for Dee. I think there’s a lot of opportunity for him to shine, and just very grateful for Dee’s time here and all his contributions he made to our squad."

I wonder why they would take a late round pick for him?

Is he a locker room problem? Not a lot for a solid player that led the team in tackles. Injuries maybe?

Just asking. Don't know much about the guy.
He was the odd man out and entering his final season on the rookie contract. Warner will be back with Greenlaw returning to SF. They also have an up and coming 2025 pick in Martin.

Nope. By all accounts he’s actually a good dude and hasn’t had injury issues.

They just had the opposite problem as the Cowboys.

Too many good LBs

The main thing is that they signed fan favorite Dre Greenlaw who has left for Denver for one season.

It's a big bet from general manager John Lynch on the health of Greenlaw and one that he had better hope pays off.

Greenlaw has played in just 10 games over the last two seasons. He played in eight games with the Denver Broncos last season and just two with San Francisco in 2024 as he was coming off the heartbreaking Achilles injury he suffered in the Super Bowl.

I think San Fran realized that it would be a negative for Dee to ask him to sit on the bench after starting for the better part of 2 years when he has done everything they asked him to. They felt Greenlaw was better but Winters deserved a chance to play somewhere else.

Winters for Greenlaw (+$2.6m cap dollars) and a 5th is a dumb trade.

I don't even love Winters but it seems really pointless.

I think it was probably the 2nd-best move in the Draft (1st being the Downs pick). Trading a 5th for Winters seems like a no-brainer. Solid player who should be a Day 1 starter on this squad.
I love a player who had to earn his place on the field. As a 6th rnd pick nothing is given to you. He had a really good season last year in his first full time on the field. He should get even better with more playing time

He's just not that good.

Classic journeyman. He’s good enough to start but not so good that you aren’t looking for an upgrade. He’s not likely to stick around as a backup because there will always be a talent-starved team looking for a temporary starter. Consequently, he’s a guy who’s always part of the rebuild but can never stick around long enough to enjoy the fruits.

The Cowboys are potentially the ideal spot for him. They have two safeties who can defend both the slot receiver and the run. Winters doesn’t have to be Ray Lewis.
