I was listening to Steve Sabol doing an interview to promote the America's Game series they have going now. And he said, "Without question, The 49er's are the Greatest Dynasty the sport as ever seen"

Just wondering what everyone else thought about that statement!

As much as I hate them you have to give them their props. They ruled the 80's.

They were good from the 80's to the mid 90's. The 4 SB's in the 80's were pretty impressive too.

I don't know about the best, but they were up there.

In order of appearance...Dynasties: Packers..then the Dolphins....the Steelers... the 49ers....then the Cowboys...And finally the Pats...

And a team like the Raiders, especially under Madden were always a good team.

I think it's difficult to compare teams from different eras.

All the above teams dominated their eras.

That's good enough for me.

I don't think they are better than the Cowboys, but they do have an argument. They have real history going back to the 40s. They had success in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. The Cowboys have more fans, just as many Superbowls, far more Superbowl apperences, and more history of success. (60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s) If they can wrangle this team into something, it will include the 2000s. To have success in every single decade that you're team has existed. To have more fans than every other team in existence. I don't know how you can pick anyone else. The only team that I can think of that *could* come close. The Green Bay Packers.

True. I think the Dallas franchise though speaks for itself with 8 SB appearance and 5 wins. As for a particular period of time I think your order is pretty accurate but as for Franchise success I think Dallas has accomplished more than those other teams.

The thing is, I'd throw Dallas in there too for the 60's, 70's, 80's...that team went from the Packers straight thru to the 49ers with 2 championships, 5 Super Bowls and 8 or 9 NFC championship games.

The greatest dynasty football's ever seen was the old Browns of the AAFC.

No other team's ever had players that were more physically dominant or a coach that was so far ahead of the game.

I think it is BS wrapped in lies and sprinkled with latrine marinade.

1966-1985 Dallas didn't have a losing season. Won more games in the 70s than any other team including the Steelers. Five Super Bowl appearances. Numerous division titles, the lone NFC team to win a Super Bowl in an AFC dominated decade.

1992-1996, the second Cowboy dynasty basically whooped up on the 49ers of the 80s on two separate NFC Championship occasions. Montana watched from the sidelines in 1992 but don't tell me he was better than league MVP Steve Young at that time.
1993 Dallas guaranteed victory over the team of the 80s and smashed them as promised.
1994 Niners set out to buy a team to beat Dallas, mission accomplished after huge Dallas turnover and injury turmoil, Dallas was still 5 minutes of forgetable football away from a three -peat.
1995 Dallas wins an un prescedented 3 out of 4. NFL record 8th Super Bowl appearance, Dallas extended their own record which they orginally held at 6.

2006 Dallas prepares to make a record 9th Super Bowl appearance and take home an unmatched 6th title.

Look at their franchise's overall best compared to Dallas:

Tom Landry, Jimmy Johnson, Barry Switzer (say what you want but he won), Bill Parcells.

vs.

Bill Walsh, George Seifert, Steve Mariucci, Mike Nolan.

Don Meredith, Roger Staubach, Danny White, Troy Aikman, Tony Romo (he's legit)

vs.

John Broady, Joe Montana, Steve Young, Jeff Garcia, Alex Smith.

Bob Hayes, Drew Pearson, Tony Hill, Michael Irvin, Terry Glenn, Terrell Owens

vs.

Dwight Clark, Freddie Solomon, John Taylor, Jerry Rice, Terrell Owens, Antonio Bryant.

Mike Ditka, Billy Joe DuPree, Doug Cosbie, Jackie Smith, Jay Novacek, Jason Witten

vs.

Brent Jones, Vernon Davis.

Etc... Etc... You get the idea, in almost every way they are a shade below Dallas, they matchup favorably in many ways historically but did so in a smaller window than Dallas ever has.

This is the lone decade that Dallas has not played in at least two conference championships, an NFL record of marvelous consistency.

The 90s Cowboys was the greatest dynasty ever in football

The greatest dynasty ever in any sport was Auerbach's Celtics teams back in the 60s

Sabol is not comparing the 49ers franchise and the Cowboys franchise.

basically, were the 49ers of the 80s better than the Steelers of the 70s, Packers of the 60s, Cowboys of the 70s, Cowboys of the 90s, and Patriots of the 2000s?

Like someone else mentioned, it's difficult to rate dynasties of different eras. I wasn't old enough to watch football in the 70s or 80s so I can't really say.

Don't forget about UCLA basketball under John Wooden. This one is pretty hard to beat ...

Well, every one of the teams I mentioned had Dallas play a huge role in the dynasties...

The Packers in the two Championship games.

The Dolphins in our first super bowl win.

The Steelers in their two wins.

And the 49ers in the "Catch" game...

So for the long haul, the Cowboys have been THE franchise.

During Super Bowl week, when ESPN plays all those past Super Bowl highlight films, the Niners are WAY over respresented, and they play the Cowboy SB losses at a 4-1 rate over the wins.
When Dionne Sanders played for the Niners (a partial season), he's was everybody's darling, the Prince of the NFL, Defensive MVP. Less then a year later, he was a cocky, big mouth showoff who wouldn't tackle. What changed you ask? His uniform, from Niner to Cowboy.
"The Catch". This is another doozy. A routine play that happens every Sunday in the NFL, but it's legendary only because of WHO it happened against by a team everyone just oozes over.
Ed Debartolo. A convicted Mafioso gangster. The only owner in NFL history who lost his team because of criminal activity. And the only thing you heard during that episode was "Mr. Debartolo and his family are going through a difficult time. He wishes to thank the 49ers and their fans for all their support during the family crises". Bunk!! If Jerry Jones jay-walks, he's hung from the highest tree without a trial!
I've got dozens of examples like this that have to do specifically with the Cowboy/Niner thing.
Over a 32 year span, the Cowboys went to 16 NFC Champ. games, of which they won 8! That's an average of playing "to go to the SB" every other year. Nobody's even close to that accomplishment.
Finally, all those years the Niners were "wonderfull", their division was the absolute gutter/bottom feeders of the NFL. They played with the Rams, Falcons & Saints during a time that, for more than a decade these three teams averaged around 10 wins between them.............for over a decade! Then, they got the Panthers in expansion. Everyone knows about momentum in the NFL, during games as well as over a Season. The last time the Niners won the SB with Young, they played their division the first half of the season. That's right, the schedule makers had the Niners play the Rams, Saints, Falcons and expansion Panthers until week 9. Look it up. Of course they entered week 10 with a 9-1 record, full of confidence and momentum.
Sorry for the rant, but this has been a pet peeve of mine for years.
Please inquire if you want more examples of pro-Niner/anti-Cowboy bias.....
