CSNBayArea.com reports that Smith was trying to break up a fight at around 2 a.m. when he was stabbed in the shoulder and abdomen with what is believed to be a small pocketknife. Officers responded to a 911 call at a large party at 2:14 a.m., and three people were taken to the hospital: Smith and two people who sustained gunshot wounds. None of the injuries were life threatening.

Like arglebargle and many, many coaches (I'm sure) -- Herm Edwards comes to mind -- have said: “Nothing good happens after midnight.”

Sucks for Aldon Smith. Don't take any joy in hearing he got stabbed. Glad to read his injuries are considered relatively minor; non life threatening. Hoping ALL of our 'Boys -- particularly the younger guys -- are watching the various reports of off the field problems other teams' players have been having and are living up to the RKG moniker they've been given — maintaining appropriate self-discipline, accordingly.

Maybe it's just me being selfish, but if I'm a professional athlete, and I know my bodies health is what keeps food on the table, and the nice house and cars, I'm not putting myself out there in any way to risk that.

If I see a fight going on, I'm not intervening. I might call the cops, or yell for them to stop, but I'm not stepping between people with weapons.

I am sure this is one of the worst times of the year to be a GM or HC. Wake up every morning praying that one of your players hasn't shown up in the police blotter somewhere.
