49ers release Darnell Dockett

Darnell Dockett’s stay with the 49ers was short one.

The former Arizona Cardinals defensive end was a surprise release, as the 49ers worked to get their roster down to the NFL maximum of 53 players before the deadline at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The 49ers informed Dockett on Friday he was released, a source confirmed.

Dockett, 34, who missed all of last season with the Cardinals after sustaining a torn ACL in training camp, signed with the 49ers shortly after the Cardinals released him in the offseason. The 49ers guaranteed $2 million of his two-year, $7.5 million contract.

The 49ers initially envisioned Dockett as a pass-rush specialist – a role Dockett said was a good fit for him. But Dockett had a difficult time distinguishing himself among a crowded group of defensive linemen.

You can rename it the DL FA thread :)

Texans waived NT Louis Nix.

Nix was the 83rd overall pick in last year's draft. He never played a down for the Texans after missing his entire rookie season with a wrist injury. The Texans then signed Vince Wilfork this offseason and drafted NT Christian Covington.

I would look at Dockett. He is a beast and SF already guaranteed him 2m. I heard something about a cracked rib.

found it:
The reasons behind Dockett's surprise exit are unclear, though the veteran linebacker had been slowed by a rib injury. Dockett might have rubbed some in the organization the wrong way when he tweeted that his rib was broken, a diagnosis that Tomsula refuted.

"Yeah, it's cartilage," Tomsula said Wednesday, via ESPN.com. "The crack is in the cartilage, which is treated like a contusion. It's not the bone. If it was the bone, we would be talking about something different (and more serious)."
