Report: 49ers unlikely to franchise Goldson
4444.jpg

Multiple league sources tells CSN Bay Area the 49ers are "leaning toward not placing the franchise tag" on free agent S Dashon Goldson.

Retaining Goldson is expected to be one of the 49ers' top priorities, but beat writer Matt Maiocco reports the sides are "not believed to be close on a long-term contract agreement." http://www.rotoworld.com/headlines/nfl/256353/report-49ers-unlikely-to-franchise-goldson

I wonder what kind of money he'll command on the market versus Anthony Spencer. I know its filling one hole while creating another, but if its more cost effective why not consider it? He's a 28 year old pro bowl safety.

Byrd or draft a safety. Goldson Might want and command more than he is worth. He maybe a upgrade over Sensy but for how much? Goldston might be a product of that defense and he was abused in the Super Bowl.

I for one, would be reluctant to sign any of the niners secondary. i believe there great pass rush really improves their secondary and their fore makes an average safety look great. possibly the reason their not franchising him. Now if Earl Thomas hit the market that a different story.

Earl Thomas is still a boy barely out of college.

I'm in. I think him and Church would make a beastly combo in Kiffin's system. I'm also fairly confident in Crawford replacing Spencer, so I wouldn't view this move as causing another hole.

We shouldn't be putting more big money contracts in the secondary, better off solidifying the trenches.

True, but if we use free agency to shore up our safety need, then (hypothetically) we could focus on the lines in the draft.

I like Goldson but rather draft someone early to replace sensebaugh

I want another S badly but I'm wondering if there are so many holes they don't move in other directions this year.

Goldson was the player I wanted when he was last in FA. Now, he'd be way too expensive. And he's also the beneficiary of a great front. No, thanks.

If we address S in VFA, it'll be a more moderate upgrade. Or else it's a relatively high draft pick someplace.

Drafting by need is a disaster waiting to happen.
