5 Biggest Dallas Cowboys Draft Needs After First Week Of Free Agency

The Dallas Cowboys lost a lot of talent during the first week in free agency and added very little. While Cowboy fans are panicking over the lack of activity, the truth is there is still plenty of time for Dallas to make significant moves to improve their team. Let’s take a look at the five biggest positions of need that Dallas should address in the NFL Draft.

5. Safety

Barry Church and J.J. Wilcox did an adequate job as the starting safeties in 2014, but Dallas has little depth behind them. Dallas definitely has more pressing needs, but if a good safety is there in the middle of the draft, the Cowboys shouldn’t hesitate to pick one up.

4. Linebacker

Dallas lost both Justin Durant and Bruce Carter in free agency last week. Dallas could try to bring back Rolando McClain, but even if they do, they will still need to take at least one linebacker in the draft.

3. Cornerback

Dallas still has to decide if they want to pay Brandon Carr or cut him and free up some cap space. Whether Carr returns or not, Dallas will still have to address the CB position. I believe Dallas should draft a CB in one of the first three rounds of the draft.

2. Defensive Line

One of Dallas’ biggest weaknesses in 2014 was the lack of a pass rush. Dallas was unable to address that weakness in the first week of free agency, which means they will have to select multiple defensive linemen in the upcoming draft.

1. Running Back

A week ago, running back was not the pressing need that it is today. Dallas still believed that DeMarco Murray would be returning in 2015. Now Murray is in Philadelphia and Dallas is left without a viable replacement. That means Dallas must look to the draft. Some guys they might be looking at will be Todd Gurley, Melvin Gordon, Tevin Coleman and T.J. Yeldon.

Yes agree, DL, then LB / CB / RB depending which is highest on the draft board. S is in that mix as well, but a RB before S.

Here is what I want to happen (in no particular order):

1. Give Dez a long-term deal. Getting him off the franchise tag would free up cap space and avoid any locker room instability issues if Dez goes into the season with a chip on his shoulder.

2. Resign Rolando McClain. He's young and supremely talented. People thought he was a savior last year. Now a house burning rumor and everyone wants him gone. We're too smart to let rumors sway our thinking after the Wal Mart ordeal. He is elite-level talent that we can get for cheap. And he likes Dallas. It would be foolish to try to replace him with guys like Rivers/Gachkar/Brinkley.

3. Sign Hardy. He's another elite-level talent that we can potentially get for relatively cheap. Plus, I've heard he's an outstanding teammate. D-line is our biggest need but there are no D-line prospects that would be available at #27 that would make the kind of impact Hardy would.

4. Avoid RB in the 1st round. We need to trust our O-line. And we have some solid prospects on the current roster. Williams was an elite prospect coming out of college and finally seems to be healthy for the first time in his career. The way people are foaming out the mouth about Gurley, multiply that and you have what they were doing when McFadden came into the league. And Randle really showed flash in the limited carries he had last year. There is a lot of talent in rounds 3 and 4 at RB. We'll be fine at RB.

5. Get the best defensive player in the draft. Gurley will most likely be the best player but we've been fooled by RBs before. And he might not even play in 2015. I really hope a guy like Marcus Peters falls to us. He might be the best CB in a draft loaded with CBs. A guy like Odighizuwa would also make a big impact. But I think Peters is the better talent.

6. Start adding some bargain-level players to the D-line via free agency like we've been doing at LB. Even if they don't make the final roster, we need all the D-line competition we can get.

Defense: DE, DT, CB, LB, S
Offense: QB, RT, RB, G

I still say go BPA in any order they fall to us or trade down...

Defense needs addressing but I am still taking Gurley over any defensive player that will be on the board at 27.

RB may be #1 but that position is way easier to fill than any of the DL spots. You can get one of the best RB's in the draft in the second round... if not the best. The best DT's and DE's usually are gone past pick #15.

If we do get Hardy I would say either trade back and get PJ Williams in the 2nd (you can do it at 27 as well... but it is a little high) or get Gurley. Second round I would say get Bennett if he is there, without question, if he is gone get the best RB, assuming no Gurley (one will have fallen into our laps).
