Even at the start of camp, the majority of the Dallas Cowboys’ preliminary 53-man roster will be pretty well established. At least two players deep at just about every position are set in place before the Cowboys even arrive in Oxnard, Calif., to conduct their on-field preparations for the 2017 season.
With somewhere around 48 players already penciled onto the roster, here are five guys who could make up that last group, and what their paths through July and August must look like to grab a spot on the roster.
Rod Smith, RB
Smith, the brother of Cowboys linebacker Jaylon Smith, made the team’s initial 53-man roster in 2016 as a rare backup fullback, after spending his rookie season in 2015 as a reserve running back. Smith’s size and speed combination makes him a very viable special-teams contributor. That, and his ability to play fullback in a pinch, makes him the type of valuable player who can do a lot of things. If Smith can prove to be a viable ball carrier and pass catcher in the preseason, he will solidify his ability to play his primary position, and pave a path to a spot on the regular season roster...
