5 players the Cowboys could regret passing on in this year’s draft

On Bryce Petty, Gil Brandt said yesterday that he talked to Jerry about the decision not to take him. Gil rarely talks ill of any draft prospect and he wouldn't come right out and say it but it was clear that the Cowboys just didn't think he was going to be successful in the NFL after doing a lot of diligence and research on the guy.

Per Gil, Jerry was very interested in taking a QB in this draft and will be from here on out, but they will be very picky and very diligent in their search. Gil talked up several QB prospects that would be of interest to the Cowboys in next year's draft, most particularly Trevone Boykin.

There are some nuggets. I wouldn't have minded the Cowboys drafting a QB. But drafting one just to draft one is am strongly against.

Why would we regret those rb's? Cowboy's like Randle, McFadden and RWilliams. They want to see what Randle can do with more carries. And like McFadden's overall versatility. RWilliams, who knows, he could be a diamond in the ruff. That's 3 rb's Boy's want to see what they have.

Plus none of them are rookies, so we already know what they can , and cannot do. Too many times the next great back turns out to be a JAG ( just another guy ) :):)

Besides Coleman and Duke there wasn't a RB available for us in the 3rd that gives me much excitement.

Once the Cardinals took David Johnson I didn't want a RB.

The Dallas FO seemed to be thinking that way too.
They said as the got deeper in the draft, they began to comparing the remaining backs to Williams (said his name came up many times) and they didn't see the draftable players as being a certain upgrade. And, of course, the mentioned McFadden too.
So They took players at other positions.
Not sure what they meant by "later" in the draft, but I assume it was 4th-7th rounds or so.

I don't think you can regret staying patient and following your board.

By contrast, trading away picks to move up, or reaching for a player, can turn out to be quite regrettable.

Because one of them might succeed while ours utterly fail? I think that would bring regret.

That might not happen, but I don't think we can count success with any of them before they show it ... including those we could regret passing on.

That's not a terrible list.
I think Gregory miraculously being there at 60 changed out plans. Just really hard to pass on him there.

Gregory, even with his risk factor, at that stage was better than say, Tevin Coleman, who I never cared for. You simply cannot pass on who is considered the draft's best pass rusher at that point.

While I liked Buck Allen, not going to be upset that he was not taken in the 3rd either.

How can any one with an ounce of football knowledge argue that a 2nd or 3rd tier RB would be a better pick then arguably the best pass rushing DE in the draft?

I bet most teams with needs at DE and RB would take the DE over a RB. Serviceable RBs are a dime a dozen, elite pass rushers are few and far between.

We'll forget about Demarco Murray by week 5.

We won't have to protect our defense as much. We'll be able to pile it on and let our defense step on their throats. Having a committee of eager guys battling for carries trying to prove themselves is much better than relying on a newly paid bell cow that's only played 16 games once.

Bryce freaking Petty? Another idiot DMN writer who has no idea at all

I think its difficult to criticize this team for drafting their number 4 rated prospect at pick 60 instead of Duke and Coleman.

As far as Ajayi is concerned, although that may be a more legitimate criticism, the Cowboys had logical reasons to pass. Stephen stated that they simply believe they have a better back on the roster:

"His name [I.e., Williams] actually came up quite a bit (during the draft)," Jones said. "Many times we were looking at backs later in the draft that we compared to Ryan and didn't feel like they were as good as he was."

He also probably didn't want to bring up the knee.

Another poster said it, "you cant have everyone" I also wanted a RB boohoo, the cowboys still signed one plus they like what they have. Oh noes the world does not revolve around me. The draft is over and im not rueing every pick we didnt make. Stash also nailed it, that RB in the 5th, better choice. We didnt do it. move on. Its easier sitting on the sidelines saying what you thought should have happened. Its over now, we take our christmas gifts and go see how they work.

For me, lets look at TC and what does what. Dallas wants to roll with what we have at RB. than we do it. For me, i want to see what Williams has. Hey, i talked about how Dunbar is. Maybe hes progressed? Idk but the coaches do.

The media wants to talk? Fine, lets ask they how wrong they were about Murray. I did not buy the negative hype he kept getting. Did this line help some? Yes, was it all the line, not every play. None in the slightest. Murray had some good runs based on his talent. And lets not forget, it was the coaching staff who kept with the run this time around. So that helped Murray some too. But at the end of the day, everything clicked together and all the parts worked.

Time to move on.

Doubt they're gonna regret much of anything after this offseason.

At that point with Gregory/Jones you're getting the 4th and 20th best players for picks 27 and 60. Highway robbery if the draft ended after that selection. Then you grab the consensus best guard for pennies on the dollar. You couldn't have scripted it any better than that.
