I berated a list by a media member so only fair to give myself the same microscope and chance for criticism.

1. How does the NTs other than Mazi Smith look? If Dallas can develop some NT depth that'll go a long way towards addressing the massive run stop issues.

2. Is Elam getting a starting CB spot by default or does he look the part? Dallas has picked up underachieving R1 guys before and they have generally spent a year doing nothing. But you can really hit a guy and Dallas can really use that in a battered secondary.

3. Who is the guy bringing energy on each side of the ball? You can't just talk culture it has to translate to the field for practices. What players are making a difference here?

4. What rookies simply look like they belong? Some guys just have NFL bodies and movement skills, and it is clear day 1.

5. With CeeDee and Pickens at WR1 and WR2 who is best suited to be a WR3 that can play both inside and outside? Or does that force two players to fill the role; cycling in and out around where Lamb lines up?

Bonus Q: Does Schotty have better ideas to utilize gadget players like Turpin and Vaughn than Mike did?

Ill say this to the Bonus question.. Im not an MM fan but until the offense can get some core plays they can run for positive yardage consitantly then the gadget plays are never going to come...The OL has to be better for Shcotty to get the chance to show those..hopefully the coaching changes to the OL will have that big impact we need. MM was no inovator but with the OL play last year it was tough to run the core plays.

This fan believes in plung pool gold! :starspin:

5. Turpin and Blue will keep linebackers flat footed and give quick release protection for Dak.
and for the 3rd on the field WR, Tolbert will push ball movements and Red Zones.

Energy ... linebackers and defensive ends

Elam does look the part.

Good questions.
Great stuff for me forum to masticate upon.

If Someone could give Mazi a kick in his britches and our LB puzzle is solved, we could be dangerous.

I hope Dallas has a NT somewhere on the roster. You're right in that it has been a weakness, especially vs. the run.

Dallas is not one NT away from stopping the run though. It just takes a lot more- like DE's that can contain, LB's that can close fast, hard tackling safeties and willing CB's. How about an offense that scores points and takes opposing offenses out of their run game? I get the obsession with NT, but stopping the run is not that simple.

This is the one veteran I want to see return to a dominance on the right side.

NFL: Dallas Cowboys at Philadelphia Eagles

Why would Elam suddenly be a good player here when he wasn't before? Some argue Carolina is just incompetent when it comes to Mingo and Sanders (which I don't buy, but okay), but you can't say that about Buffalo and McDermott.

That's what we have to trick ourselves in to thinking every time we get a player that USED to something because he was a former 1st round pick

We also have to compare untested 5th, 6th, and 7th rookies to established All Pros......its the honeymoon period for the homers

They'll be filled with self-righteous and bold proclamations until September of every new season.......and when reality and truth sets in, fade back into the shadows.

Rinse repeat.....

We shouldn't. The GM brings in Jags, 1st rd busts and George Pickens and declares " Mission Accomplished"!

The only thing worse than Jerry doing that every year ( minus Pickens) is some of our fans trying to sell his snake oil as a remedy......even before they hit the field

All good questions. In the bonus category I would say, let's get some basic plays down and not spend to much time on gadget plays. If we can run the football, run screens and draws, we won't need to use to many gimmicks to move the ball. Gadget plays are great but they are all about timing. When you run them makes all the difference. Please, not deep in the red zone.

As for the WR question, I wonder if all the guys vying for that position will get a fair shot at it or will they give Mingo the majority of reps to prove himself? My gut, based on watching this team for so long, is they will give Mingo and Tolbert every chance to win the WR3 spot. Guys like Brooks, Cropper, Flournoy, etc. will have to do something spectacular in limited opportunities.

I think this year is a make it or break it year for Mazi. If he does not show some significant improvement in his technique and recognition skills, he could be on the bubble next year.

Absolutely true.

Don't get me wrong, the middle is where run stopping starts, but there is a pile more to it.
