This was all related to the Mothman sightings as per John Keel.
It was sighted hanging on the bridge and many sightings in point pleasant before the collapse.

I saw that movie and read up on it.

Ultimately they said it was long red traffic light that caused the vehicles to stay on the bridge too long. Bridge couldn’t take the weight that long? Bad design?

When it was built in the 20's, vehicles were much lighter.

But the design was shoddy. There was no redundancy. Basically it was a chain that kept the thing upright and one link failed sending 46 to their death.

I always liked the Mothman Sightings stories. Lots of sightings during that period. Interesting to think about. I hear they have a statue of it in their downtown.

Point Pleasant is about 30 minutes away. My company actually has an office in PP. As a teen my cousin and I would sometimes go fishing in an area called TNT which was an abandoned munitions depot that they gridded off and made a bunch of fishing ponds. It was said to be haunted by the moth man. About the scariest thing I ever seen in Point was the two little dirty snot nosed brothers of a girl I took out once that lived in that area. lol.

Funny thing about that whole story was never being scared of the moth man stories as a youth, as most in the area were not. What most youth thought was scarier was the "stories" that were said about the divers. Stories go that after they had divers to go in to look for wreckage and or bodies... Some came back out of the water and some refused to go back in. Some said they saw catfish big enough to swallow a man and they were too scared to go back in. Never heard if those divers really said that or not, but that's the stories that many youth found scarier than the moth man lol

I remember reading about the collapse of the bridge back in the late 70's on one of my "Hey maybe UFO's do exist" kicks. John Keel who wrote the "Mothman" book was big into UFO's. When I first read about the bridge collapsing it made my spine shiver... A very bad way to meet your demise.

Made it worse when I found out years later that two of the bodies were never recovered, including a little girl. I remember reading about the now adults going to back to school right after it happened and seeing her empty chair.

Very sad.
