FOLLOWING GATES’ FOOTSTEPS? — Brandon Parks hopes to become the second Kent State athlete to make the transition from college basketball to professional football.

The Flashes’ 6-foot-10 center has workouts scheduled with a few NFL teams, including the Chicago Bears, once KSU’s NIT run ends.

Parks was recruited by several Division I football programs after leading his region in sacks as a senior at Maconaquah High School in Indiana.

NFL scouts project Parks as a possible tackle on the offensive line. He could also fit as a defensive end, especially in a 3-4 scheme. Louisville recruited Parks as a defensive end before he decided to play basketball at Kent State.

Parks has unusual athleticism for a 270-pound center. Last summer, he posted a team-best 33-inch standing vertical. Prior to his senior year of high school, he ran a 4.9 40-yard dash.

POSITION CHANGES — Kent State always seems to try out a few old faces in new places during spring football practice.

When the Golden Flashes return to the practice field at Dix Stadium in two weeks, former Crestwood High School star Bryan Wagner will move from tight end to offensive tackle. Pat Reedy will make the opposite switch from the offensive line to tight end. The 6-foot-5, 290-pound Wagner will be a sophomore at the start of the 2010 season. Reedy (6-4, 270) will be a senior.

could this be a sleeper sleeper pick for cowboys, remember too tall jones? I think he is too tall to play OT, of course we had phil pozderak or however you spell his name, but normally if your over 6-7 1/2 or 6-8, like jonathan ogden your too tall to get down and block etc in running plays
Ed "Too Tall" Jones

pic_bio_1.jpg

Ed Lee "Too Tall" Jones (born February 23, 1951 in Jackson, Tennessee) is one of only 3 players who played 15 seasons with the Dallas Cowboys. Jones' tenure is unique in "bridging gaps" of the franchise in that he was a teammate of both Bob Lilly and Troy Aikman. By the end of his 15 years with the Cowboys, he had a career sack total of 106. His highest single-season sack total was 13 (in 1985). He was a member of the famed "Doomsday Defense" squad of the 1970s. Jones was given the nickname "Too Tall" because of his height, 6 feet, 9 inches tall.

He graduated from the Merry High School in Jackson and attended Tennessee State University. Jones was the first overall draft choice in the 1974 NFL Draft.

Jones played defensive end for the Dallas Cowboys from 1974 through 1978, attempted a professional boxing career winning all of his bouts in 1979, and returned to Dallas to play for the Cowboys from 1980 through 1989. He was named All-Pro in 1981 and 1982, and played in 16 playoff games, including three Super Bowls. Jones played on three NFC champion teams and the 1978 Super Bowl winner. He retired for the second time in 1989, after a total of 15 seasons with the Cowboys.

Ed is a member of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity, and has made appearances on the American television shows Diff'rent Strokes and Married... with Children. Currently, Ed lives in Texas and spends much of his time making personal appearances, speaking engagements, and participating in celebrity golf tournaments.

I'm a mac basketball fan and I seen this kid play a fee times this year. He is big strong athletic and physical. In my opinion he has a great chance to play pro football. Does he have a chance to be picked up by the cowboys? I don't know much about it. Thanks

problem with a guy that tall is that he's going to need much more weight. He's at least 70 lbs from where he'd need to be - that's more the issue than him being 2-3 inches taller than other guys.

well i thought he would be better off at DE kinda like Too Tall Jones was, because as an OT, he would have to get down to block and he is too tall to get down on running plays i thought.

I think there is a height where you just get diminishing returns, how is a guy that's 6'10" ever gonna get leverage in the run game?

sure .. but Ed played in a very different era without 340 pound guys getting at him. Dline guys back then ran about 260 and Ed was a little heavier. This kid, he's a good 30 pounds lighter than the smallest DE you'd want in a 3-4. Given his height, no way he's strong enough.

This guy may be listed at 6'10 270 but that has to be for basketball reasons. He is about 6'8 and probably weighs over 300 pounds. I found a YouTube video on him. Go to YouTube and type his name in. He seems to be a big man and looks to be pretty athletic for a guy who has never been coached by football coaches

thats what i was thinking too, i remember seeing a picture years ago of Too Tall Jones, John Dutton and they were at the line of scrimmage rushing and chasing a runner. Too Tall and Dutton were kinda leaning down while running, not standing straight up so they could get under the blocks to stop the run etc...

Any word on this guy lately? Is there a chance the cowboys will look at him in a late round or free agency?
