7 Cowboys whose contracts must be reworked, restructured, or extended in 2024

Let’s look at the players who are currently under contract for 2024, but where their current salary isn’t ideal.

This is a two-way street. Some players are well deserving of an extension while others either have too big of a cap hit or make too little of an impact to be paid they way they are supposed to be. Check out the seven players who will need to have some things adjusted before the free agency frenzy of early March.
  • Prescott
  • Gallup
  • Lamb
  • Zack
  • Diggs
  • Tank
  • Micah

My favorite line in this article.
How to heck is Zakh Martin's name even on there I mean am I missing a Zack am I talking about the wrong guy he just got his contract reworked they're not doing it again you think the man's gonna take a pay cut after threatening holding out it finally got paid now what you gonna rework it again no that's not how it works when you give a guy a contract the very next year you don't start reworking it....

And that goes for Trayvon diggs as well I really don't understand what exactly are these people inferring that the front office somehow are gonna convince these brand new deals to get reworked?? That's not happening they better look for the money in another place.... And by the way I realized that tank has a big cap hit but he's had one of his better seasons he's still playing very well and they need to find a way to keep him maybe he signs an extension and plays for less average money...

The Cowboys are projected to be an effective $21 million over the CAP in 2024 so they have to do something. The biggest one is Dak obviously. His CAP hit is over $59 million $25 million of that is previous bonus money. Another $5 million is roster bonus. The can't restructure him unless they extend his deal. If they do nothing, the Cowboys will have $62 million in dead money to contend with in 2024. They can't trade him unless he agrees and he is not going to agree so the only thing they can do is extend his contract and spread his new bonuses into the years of his new contract. They'll probably convert his roster bonus to a signing bonus so they can spread that out as well. Depending on how many years they extend his contract, they can save somewhere around $30 million against the projected CAP in 2024 which will get them under the CAP. Then they need to come up with more money from other players.

There have a bunch of free agents who are starters this year. Tyron, Tyler Biadasz, Jourdan Lewis, Stephon Gilmore, Kearse, Fowler, Hankins, Armstrong, Gallimore and Dowdle.

I think they can let some of these guys go like Gallimore and Dowdle. Given that Mazi Smith has not been the player they expected they may need to re-sign Hankins, if he still wants to play. They get Diggs back but He only replaces one of Gilmore and Lewis. Kearse is a key player but has not looked as god as he did last year.

But the point is, all these guys play and if they are not resigned they must be replaced by players of equal caliber at least. In the past, Dallas has replaced players who were free agents with less expensive, and often less capable, alternatives. Losing Armstrong and Fowler at DE is going to be a problem, unless Sam Williams make a miracle leap of ability in one year.

If LVE retires, the Cowboys get a $2.5 million CAP save.

Trey Lance is a $5 million CAP hit next year. Rush is under $3 million. If they trade Lance before the new season begins, they get a $5+ million CAP save. The question is, will anyone want him?
I realize people like Cooper rush he's a Jag of all Jags most overrated player on our team act like he's irreplaceable no you don't give up a fourth round pick and then immediately get rid of a guy who could be at least your best backup you've had in years and possibly a starter down the road it's time to get rid of Cooper rush... Now I'm not sure you wanna do that until after training camp but either way I think you have it backwards you knew going in what his cap hit was gonna be no way the front office is gonna turn around and try to get rid of the guy before he ever even sees the field...

The one that stands out to me is the Gallup deal. Just a terrible contract. Get out of it as soon as you can and try to keep Cooks.

Lance stays.

But Dak.... he better win a Super Bowl. Or get more help from the Refs.

I would:

Extend Prescott
Cut Gallup
Extend Lamb
Trade Zack
Extend Parsons
Leave Diggs Contract alone but evaluate possible trades if Quinn stays the DC.
Tank: Extend him to a team friendly deal. If he wants to get paid trade him.
If they give more $$$ to Dak, then our cap is screwed for half a decade.

First of all you're not wrong about something needing to be done with Michael Gallup but calling it terrible he reworked it before this year I believe he only made 4 million against the cap this year the total contract was 22 million which is 11 per year and then he redid it that's not terrible at all... I get he had a down year and we might need to move on from him but calling it terrible I mean he made $4 million this year that's chump change in the NFL.. I didn't look at the cap hit next year but I know they reworked his deal just like they rework tyron Smith and everyone else who's been injured they've been doing a good job of helping the team out I believe tank did the same thing so I wouldn't call it terrible... But yes it might be time to move on...

This is not meant as any slam against the Cowboys or any team, but the salary cap is a joke if you can constantly extend and re-work contracts. If it is to have any meaning at all, it should be
"one and done." Whatever contract you sign initially, THAT is what stays in place vs the cap. Now, you can revise just cuz you want to save money. But if you want fairness, the only way it really comes is to force GMs to make
up front decisions and take risks up front.

Extend Cee Dee
Cut Gallup
Dak is a key decision , if dak does not prove his worth in the playoffs again , then jerry needs to cut him and rebuild the QB position, 59 mil cap hit is inssuffereable given the production.

It can be a big problem.

Philly had 60 million in dead cap this season.

  • Prescott - Extension. Will save maybe $15m.
  • Gallup - Cut post June 1. Save $9.5m.
  • Lamb - Extension. Save $5m.
  • Zack - Can't do much.
  • Diggs - Just signed. Probably won't touch.
  • Tank - Near the end of his career. Will keep him but not touch.
  • Micah - Extension. Will likely increase his cap hit.
  • Vander Esch. Pre-June 1 cut/retirement. Save $2m.
Overall, Dallas is in trouble. They are going to have to let most of their free agents walk. Gilmore, Pollard, Tyron, Biadasz, Armstrong, etc. Better have a much better draft class next year.

The following year looks better.

Jerry called Philly out in the offseason as having "gone for it" last year with a big hit this year. He got a lot of grief for it, including from myself. In hindsight, he was right. Philly gutted their defense in the offseason and they paid for it.
