8 bands who continue to be snubbed by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
Story by Lee Vowell
2/24/2025

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announced its 2025 nominees earlier this year, and the inductees will be known in late April. There is currently a fan vote happening, and you can join in. The issue is if you are a fan of one of the bands below, you have little hope.

Without outright putting it in writing, the Rock Hall seemingly has unspoken guidelines. One is that if you are a great metal band, you are probably not going to get in. Some metal bands will, but most other deserving ones will not.

If you don't come from the United States (at least past the mid-1970s), you probably are going to have a harder time getting in as well. Those are the breaks. The eight bands below feel your pain.

These bands continue to be snubbed by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
  • Iron Maiden
  • Alice in Chains
  • REO Speedwagon
  • Styx
  • Motörhead
  • Mötley Crüe
  • Boston
  • The Smiths

I wouldn't consider Speedwagon a snub.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a joke. A Hall of Fame should be an honor only the best of the best receive. The Rock and Roll HoF has so many underserving artists in it it has become something of a dishonor not to be in it.

How do you induct ABBA, the Beastie Boys, Buffalo Springfield, Deep Purple and Blondie into the same Hall of Fame as The Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin. and other all time greats? I am not knocking ABBA and Buffalo Springfield, et al, I like them all, but Hall of Fame worthy? I liked Demarco Murray as a RB too, but I would never suggest he belongs in the football HoF.

They kept the Moody Blues out of the R&R HoF for years despite them having top selling albums and hit songs over 4 decades. The Moodys also introduced musical innovations like the melotron, and symphony. I get they are an acquired taste but the point is they met all the criteria for HoF induction and yet they were excluded while many inferior artists were inducted. It was rumored that the R&R HoF was very personal for some people who deliberately excluded certain acts from induction.

There are almost 500 inductees into the R&R HoF which just began in 1986! There are less than 400 in the NFL HoF. There are 356 in the Major League Baseball HoF.

The R&R HoF is far from an exclusive club. Someone needs to start a real R&R HoF that is far more exclusive and sticks to specific criteria for induction.

Iron Maiden, Motley Crue and Boston at least should be in. Missy Elliott and Joan Jett are in for Christ sakes, place doesn't have much credibility least to me
It's such a joke I almost didn't post this.

When you look at who's in and who's out I don't see how anyone can give them the slightest bit of creditability.

Iron Maiden gets in or we riot!

The HoF is a joke.

Of those 8 bands, Iron Maiden, Styx and Motley Crue deserve to be in.

Jethro Tull goes in before any of those three.
Alice In Chains deserves to be in. They were original, talented, and awesome... Unfortunately, Layne Staley dies way too soon, and they weren't as prolific as I wish they had been.

But yeah, they deserve the recognition.

That's the only reason I wouldn't put them in. Not a big enough body of work. Same reason I voted no on Boston.

I'm not really a Styx or Crue fan but they churned out a ton of very popular music so I'd give them a vote.

I mean at the time, those first two Boston albums and for what Tom Scholtz did they are certainly more deserving than some that are already inducted

For sure. I was just transitioning from pop to rock when that first album hit and it is one of the first albums I spent my paper route money on. I agree that if you're going to put Joan Jett in you have to put Boston in. Alice in Chains, as well. "My" R&R HoF would be more exclusive and longevity would be a factor, though.

You might be able to talk me into Boston because of the groundbreaking stuff Scholtz did, though. Maybe.

I can see the Beastie Boys and Blondie in the HOF, they started basically a whole new genre of music and they did represent a certain segment in time of American music.

The only problem I have with Boston is that, to me, most of their songs sound pretty much the same.
